stator soaked with oil

Post by llp773 » Sun Mar 19, 2006 10:51 pm

I recently purchased an upgraded "doohickey" on my 1998 KLR650. When I removed the outer cover that houses the stator, I noticed the Stator was soaked in oil. Is this normal? I have not had any electrical problems other than replacing the battery when I first bought the bike a couple of years ago. Anyone else experience this & if so, what was the cause?

Totally normal - that side of the engine is part of the crankcase cavity, and not sealed off. all the best, Mike

Sounds like the same results I had with the Electrex "high" output stator. The only thing high about these stators is their unverified claims. -svt- ==================================== A friend has an '01 he picked up a few months back. First thing was replace the battery, to ride from Ca. to Wa. During the trip, the bike would not fully charge the battery. He then replaced the stator with the 250w upgrade. With the bike at idle, voltage is 12.2, take rpm up to 3000 and voltage only goes to 12.7. W or w/o headlight, voltage has same readings. Going by the Clymer book, RR checks out ok, pickup coil checks ok, but when checking the stator yellow wires to ground, I get a reading when there shouldn't be any. This tells me that there's a short of some kind. The really strange part, is after checking wires, adding another ground wire, and performing all the checks, replacing the "supposedly" bad parts hasn't changed the problem - no charging. Any suggestions?? Thanks, Glen __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com
