looking for tips

I just purchased a 1997 650 with only 2400 miles it had been stored for a will i have cleaned the carb and backed out the pilot jet to 1 3/4 turns while cleaning up the bike i noticed the airbox is melted above the header pipe and the coolant bottle is also it still holds fluid but it got warm. I have orderd a airbox but I have not figured out what could be the problem. After cleaning the carb I started it up ran very good at idle and with choke but would not rev up very well I was thinking this was because I had the airbox out and it was free breathing making it lean out. Could the over heating be from being left to idle for a long time? The manual says not to let idle for more than 5 min. ???? I do not really want to put a new airbox on just to have it melt again please HELP!! Thanks! Great site!

I started mine the other day and rode once around the block with the air filter out while I was waiting for the filter to dry from cleaning (It was raining so not much dust in the air). It ran exactly as you described until I put the filter back in. Mike A18

#1 I hope you meant 2 3/4 turns. Usually the factory setting is about 1 3/4 turns. Mine is about 3 and it runs great. #2, The coolant reservoir is supposed to be warm. If you have coolant in the system the temp gauge will tell you when its getting hot and no matter how hot the fluid temp gets, it shouldn' t deform the reservoir. If the air cleaner box and coolant reservoir have been distorted I'd be asking how they got that way. My first guess is that it was not attached properly and had shifted position and come too close to the engine. It may have even come incontact with the engine. The engine would have to get pretty hot to do that if all was connected properly. The other considerations are some sort of outside heat source, like it was setting too close to a hot object, or that it is a defect.
