bypassing cutch switch worked for a day

Post by Don Marr » Thu Feb 02, 2006 12:16 pm

This started when I went down in deep sand on the left side. When I got the bike up the left hand guard was jammed back against the clutch handle completely compressing it. I pulled the hand guard back out and tryed to start the bike. Confirmed in neutral, clutch out, no joy. I did the cluch safety switch bypass as described in the FAQ and Marknet. That worked for one day and now the KLR is silent again. I have heard mention of the Safety Relay, but I have not found a good explination of where it is located. Help. The KLR is all that stands between me and going stir crazy on an island that meassures 10X30 miles, and is mostly sand. Don KLR 650 in Bahrain K1100LT in Coos Bay, OR

Camshaft chain is on the left, actually driven by the same sprocket as the balancer chain - different set of teeth, tho. There's been an issue from time to time in the past of the impeller in the water pump being loose. First, tho, I would rule out all loose screws, before going into the engine. Several listers on another forum have reported the right shroud attach screw is too long, and makes a nose like that as the ends of it vibrates against things..........Try checking stuff like that first. Sometimes aftermarket skid plates can act as reflectors, too. all the best, Mike

I am trying again. Don, the kickstand safety switch is sometimes the culprit. The marknet site has instructions. Some people have been known to jumper the connections so the system thinks the kickstand is always up. all the best, Mike
