klr650 sprocket info request

Post by nakedwaterskier » Tue Jan 10, 2006 11:40 pm

So I have 16 front and 43 rear and I like it. But if I wanted to back off a TAD BIT ie go closer to stock just a hair, would a 15 front and 45 rear be what I wanted or would it be 41 rear... Let's see on my old ten speed bicycle a bigger sprocket on the front and a smaller sprocket on the back would produce the highest speeds downhill??????????????????? Jeffrey Remember the stock gearing on a KLR650 is 15 front and 43 rear. Frt 43 44 45 46 %from stock 16 2.687 ///////// ////////// ////////// -6.661 16 ////////// 2.750 ////////// ////////// -4.218 16 ////////// ///////// 2.8125 ////////// -1.920 15 2.866 ///////// ////////// ////////// STOCK 16 ////////// ///////// ////////// 2.875 0.314 15 ///////// 2.933 ////////// ////////// 2.337 15 ///////// ///////// 3.000 ////////// 4.675 15 ///////// ///////// ////////// 3.066 6.978 14 3.071 ///////// ////////// ///////// 7.152 14 ///////// 3.1428 ////////// ///////// 9.630 14 ///////// ///////// 3.214 ///////// 12.142 14 ///////// ///////// ////////// 3.285 14.619 13 3.308 ///////// ////////// ///////// 15.422 13 ///////// 3.385 ////////// ///////// 18.109 13 ///////// ///////// 3.462 ///////// 20.080 13 ///////// ///////// ////////// 3.538 23.447 So... if that makes sense to you the 16/45 combo will be just 1.92% taller than the stock gearing. Probably not enough to be concerned with for power. It should make for good distance gearing. The 14/45 combo will be 12.142% lower than stock and will make a huge difference off road. And if your using a 15/45 combo the gearing will be 4.675% lower than stock and would still be fine around town and doing light dirt work. And if you were gonna get stupid a 13/45 would allow you to pull stumps at 20.080% lower than stock gearing. But I think the rear adjusters only have enough movement to work for a change of two teeth on a front sprocket. Like going from a 16 to a 14. I don't think you could tighten the chain enough going from a 16 to a 13 tooth.

Jeffrey, I kind of jammed a few more combinations into the chart at the end of this mail. It's a bit tougher to read now but I don't think I can make the data fit on only one line if I change the headings. I included rear sprocket sizes of 39, 41 and 47. The 41 tooth rear you asked about. I think Dave Jakeman told me he liked a 13/39 combo. And the 47 tooth rear Greg said he's using and I considered briefly. I think your question is how do you get closer to stock gearing than the 16/43 you currently have. The 15/41 is closer but for me it's still too far away. Maybe the 39 tooth rear would work well for you with a 14 or 13 tooth option. I think the 15/39 combo would be too tall for the power available. I really like the 47 tooth but even with the 16/47 I think it's just a little short for extended higher speed travel. For me higher speed means maybe 60-65 mph for hours on end. I don't think you could get 80 mph for extended periods of time out of a 47 tooth rear and not hurt your engine. Hope this helps. Jeff On Wed, 11 Jan 2006 05:38:30 -0000 "nakedwaterskier" writes:
