selling a stock shock with upgraded spring

greetings all. for about the 6th time my new '06 with 325 mil started right up and ran fine at 60 degrees f, but after 10 miles of easy riding wouldn't run at less than 2000 rpm and not strongly above. it eventually quit and after 5 minutes reluctantly started. it similarly quit twice more before home. i pulled off the tank and there was gas in the carb line. the plug was sooted and after cleaning it wouldn't start except with much carressing of the throttle and wouldn't idle. the choke was definitely off. i waited till the next day when it was cold and again it wouldn't start. since was warrented, i trailered it to a dealer who looked at it the next day and reported that it started and ran fine and that he could only guess that there might have been something in the carb. since he found nothing wrong, he fixed nothing and i believe that it will happen again. any ideas?

I was thinking something similar - stay close to the dealer, then take it back when it stalls out. Glad I have a good dealer nearby, happier still that I have had zero problems with my bike. Since the spark plug is sooty, that's an indicator of running too rich, so..... taking some guesses now: - Float bowl level too high..? - choke stuck (how well does it start when the engine is cold?) - stuck needle jet Blake Sobiloff wrote:

I'm suspecting bad gas and/or a dirty carb. If it's been hard to start lately you need to put your battery on a battery tender/charger to keep it charged up, if you haven't already done so. The start/run problem should work itself out, although if it is a dirty carb then that will be a little more involved. Good luck with the dealer and warranty . Hopefully if you bring it to the dealer, the symptom will present itself. If you can't get the symptom to present itself when you take it in for warranty and the dealer starts talking about non-warranty coverage- don't freak out and get pissed. The list will help you if the dealer balks in doing it. . Just trying to think about what could happen, hope this helps. It's possible that if it only fails for you and not the dealer, next thing you know he says it's your fault for wearing down the battery, yada yada , couldn't duplicate the problem, you owe us $150 yada yada, make sure you don't authorize any work to be paid by you. yada yada. We can help. Your bike should not be behaving like this - especially with such low mileage. 1) Did the problem start gradually, or suddenly? 2) When the bike is cold (hasn't been run for a day or more), does it start up easily? ( I am assuming that the answer to this is "yes" since you say it runs fine for the first 10 miles) 3) How well does it run for those first 10 miles, after it's up and running? Seem normal? 4) When you describe the spark plug as sooted, do you mean it's blackened rather than the normal golden brown appearance? 5) Stick your finger in the exhaust pipe hole when it's cold - does your finger come out blackened or dirty, or does it look clean in there? 6) There is a pink colored vent tube running from your carb to the swingarm area. Follow this up and make sure it's not pinched shut somewhere. joelprude wrote:

Something that often happens is a very small piece of dirt or metal on/in the float needle seat. I've seen several bikes that started ok when cold, but very rich and hard to start when warm. It's hard to see sometimes, it's so small..............It's hard to do a really good job on the diagnosis, not being there.......... all the best, Mike

Take a close look at #6 from Mike Frey. About a month after doing the vent tube mod, my new '04 did the same thing you described. After 25 miles of riding it began to misbehave, wouldn't run under 2,000 rpm, was hard to restart.... It turned out that where I had fumbled with the vent tubes, one had gotten up against the back side of the exhaust pipe and melted shut. Once I replaced the tube, the problem was gone. Steve W.

I learned my lesson the hard way. I was riding by myself deep in the forest and the bike stopped after riding through a mud puddle. Even though I knew about the "T" mod, it took me a while to check that - I was thinking you had to be in really deep water to cause a problem. The vent tube had picked up a glob of mud and clogged. After clearing it, it ran fine again. The T mod (in my case, I did a "Y" mod) was my first change to my KLR.
