off roading

I took the KLR out today for my first offroading adventure. I went with some friends out to the desert, Ocotillo Wells. They have full on dirt bikes. I did ok. The KLR doesn't do well in loose sand, at least with stock tires. But then I'm not telling you guys someting you don't already know. Anyway. I did ok. I didn't drop the bike, which was my main concern. I don't know if I will go again. It's about a two hour drive. It seems a long way to go to ride for about an hour and a half to load back up and drive home. Yes I did haul the bike out there. It was cold in the mountains this AM. If I do, I will have to get some knobbies. Rick

I also did my first off-road ride this past weekend. And I was surprised at how well the bike did with the OEM tires. But I wasnt in sand....Just dirt, gravel and mud. So what would you guys consider the OEM tires as far as % off road / on road...50/50? Im thinking I may want something a little more off-road orientated..But that isnt too bad for street riding. Any suggestions? Bill 05 KLR 650 [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

I'd say 50/50! The Dunlop 606 is serious dirt tire. The Dunlop doesn't bother me for street but I am no road racer type. I rode with the 606's about 1500 miles down in Mexico going to and from Copper Canyon. Like all real knobbies they are noisy on paved and wear quick. LOUD TIRES SAVE LIVES. THE DEER RUN THE OTHER WAY. Criswell
