I'm gonna have to also give the Kenda tires a "Thumbs Up" .... Best tire I have had on my klr so far, and at less than a $90 for the pair delivered to my door, I'm not gonna moan. I have approx 1400 miles on them now, and they don't even looked slightly worn. Good off road tire, and I like them for the black top also, once I had road them in for the first 100 or so miles. I am impressed with Kenda as well. I will probably use them next time I need tires....if these Challengers ever wear out.. Brad

I don't mean to step on anyones toes here, but I've talked to people that have spent $200.00 to $300.00 on a helmet and they say they buy them for the comfort, superior quality and greater safety they offer.Yet when it comes time to buy tires they want the least expensive ones out there. The way I see it is if I'm buying a tire for dirt only any knobby will do. But if I use a tire on the highway I don't want an $18.00 to $25.00 tire at speeds around 80 or 90 mph. After having only briefly owned a set of kendas and in comparing them with the D-604s that I now own the Kendas looked and felt like an $18.00 tire. The K 750 Dunlop that comes with the bike is probably one of the best 50/50 tires, too bad they wear so fast. The K 270s are nice trail tires though. Dan

I think often one uses the bike for both road and trail/dirt duty, in which case there's no alternative but to compromise between trail and dirt tires. And the Kenda 270s are a good compromise, I think. In my experience (limited, admittedly), they are almost as good on the road up to 60 or 70mph as the OEM tires, and they're far superior in certain off-road situations. Given that I'm definitely going to be using my bike for a bit of each, I think the 270s are a good choice regardless of the price. Also, a helmet you buy once every five years, whereas tires you might buy several times a year; so the difference adds between a cheap tire and an expensive tire can add up to a lot of money. -Lujo

I can't imagine having to spend 50% of my riding time, in dirt on the stock tires. I would call the K750s an 80%road, 20% dirt. I have been a tire snob the entire time I've had motorcycles, about 11 years. I would never buy a cheap tire, for the exact reasons you state. And in every case I've gotten my money's worth. And by the way, once you are buying something Snell rated, more money means more comfort, not any more safety. But, offroad I can't believe the Kenda 270 costs as little as it does. I also find I am giving up less than I though on the road. I don't want cheap tires, I want tires that work for the riding I do. It's a happy co-incidence that they're cheap-ass tires. If it makes you feel better, you could spend a lot more for IRC GP-1 tires, which the Kenda's seem to have ripped off the tread pattern from. Remember, the Chinese are building their own jets, rocket ships, and nukes. I would think they could pull off a decent motorcycle tire by now. Devon A15 kawboy15 wrote:

There is a factor involved with tires used on the highway that's not really considerd when buying off road tires, That being the safety of the tire in diff situations I know most 50/50 tires have a very small contact area with the road surface compared to the 80/20 tires So what price for safety? As far as frequent tire replacment due to wear the 80/20 tires will last longer than most any 50/50 tire. I have to admit I didn't really think the Kendas or the Maxxis C6006 was all that bad on the highway until I put the D604s on the bike. Dan

I believe this may have already been asked. I was wondering what kind of milage you guys are getting out of the K270 and K761 rear? Thanks, MTC

MTC, I got 5,000 smiles from my first 5.10 X 17 K270 rear and that was fully loaded. Could have gone longer but it was a bit squared off at the end of the trip. The current same size K270 rear has 6,000 smiles on it. About 4,000 of that was fully loaded, mostly on paved roads at speeds of 45 -65 mph. It'll get changed this winter. My first front went about 10,000 smiles and needed changing when I got done with it. Here's some hard data I collected last year while on the Great Divide Ride. I've only pasted in the info on the two Kenda K270 rears that were along for the trip. These measurements were taken at the end of each day in the center of the tread at the valve stem. My tire went the entire way and Martin had to take his tire home early when he went back to work. At about 4500 to 5000 miles (it's hard to tell because I have two sets of tires for my KLR, this and the KT966, so I'm splitting the difference), my rear K761 has reached its wear bars. It has about half its tread left compared to a new 761 because Kenda set the wear bars ridiculously high, but it *is* pretty squared off from freeway driving, so I might replace it shortly anyhow because the squared-off rear tire and scalloped front tire makes handling somewhat, err, abrupt. At under $100 for a pair from my local motorcycle tire dealer, it isn't like we're talking about a big ticket item, after all... I think my butt is worth $100 for a new pair of shoes for the mule. All in all, for a cheap tire, I'm satisfied. But if I were going to be taking a long road trip, I'd probably switch to the Avon Gripster, which has far better availability (my local tire dealer has them in *STOCK* in KLR sizes), albeit not quite as good in the rough stuff as a 761 (which is not an off-road tire by any means, but whose grooves are big enough to get at least a *little* traction in the rough stuff). And of course one Gripster costs as much as a pair of 761's! The Gripster and 761 pretty much target the same market, the guy who rides his KLR on the street and demands good street handling and traction, but doesn't want to be completely lost if he turns down that interesting little road and said interesting little road turns to gravel, then to two tracks in the dirt. -E

I have a Kenda K270 rear tire on my KLR650 that now has 5838 miles on it. About 95% of those miles were on paved roads. 5072 miles of the 5838 miles is touring miles of which only about 400 of the trip miles were on dirt. The trip miles were only about 30% on roads doing 70 to 80 MPH. When touring I run pressures of 32 to 35 psi in the rear tire & 24 to 28 psi in the front. The tire still has about 1/8" to 3/16" tread depth left on the center tread knobs. The trouble is that the tire has worn so it has a flat center profile due to all those road miles & this makes it feel kind of vague, traction wise, in the tight corners. So it's time for a new tire. The rear tire the Kenda K270 replaced was a IRC GP110 that lasted 5198 miles. The front IRC GP110 that was installed at the same time as the rear GP110 is still on the bike & has 11036 miles on it. It is completely wore out though. I'm thinking of trying the Meffo tires if I can find them. They're supposed to be real good & wear like iron. If I can't find the Meffos I might try the Gripsters. They're supposed to be a good road tire, but not the best off road tire in mud & deep sand, which I don't do with the KLR650 anyway. I have a dual sported XR250R for the rougher off road stuff.
