chain lube recommendation?
New lister here. Just sold my '98 VFR, unsubbed from the VFR list and
hopped on here to check things out before picking up a KLR in the spring.
In recent months many VFR riders have switched from whatever chain goo they
were using - WD-40, 90wt, waxes, greases or whatnot to something called
'DuPont Multi-Use Performance Lube'. The main attractions are that it
coats the chain with a lubricant but does not sling itself onto the wheel or
attract dirt like most others. I have not used it so cannot give personal
experience, but the VFR group is a hard-core, skeptical bunch who rack up
many miles and they're difficult to impress. I believe it is available in
hardware/automotive stores.

chain lube recommendation?
I too have switched to Dupont Multi lube. Mainly because it contains teflon
and molybdenum. I have known these products to really lubricate and protect
all the metal friction devices I have used on over the years, guns, drive
shafts, trans fluid, etc.
It goes on wet, but dries quickly to keep dirt and grime off. It works the
best of everythig I have tried on arguably the toughest test of all, the
Hayabusa chain. I commute 350 miles one way. The old lubes I used were
about gone at the 300 mile mark. This one makes it to the 700 mile mark.
Marketing hype says it lasts 3-5 times longer in friction fighting.
If you apply a good chain lube, wax, every 300 miles, I don't think it makes
a big difference what you use. Even WD 40 works for some if they use it
often enough. Just like the comfort of really good lubrication, I can tell
the difference in the drive chain when not lubricated well.

chain lube recommendation?
I think I am using the same stuff on my road bicycle and have had a
different experience. After about 100 miles I can hear metal on metal
and need to re-apply. Granted the chain on a bicycle is smaller, makes a
circuit through two derailleur idler wheels and experiences greater
lateral stresses as it is shifted back and forth on a 9-speed cogset,
but I am not very impressed with the ability for this stuff to stay put.
It gets even worse when wet. As little as 20 miles on my bicycle in a
rain storm will wear the lube right off.

chain lube recommendation?
I too tried some of the Dupont stuff. It goes on so thin that I was afraid
it would get inside of the o-rings and wash the grease out. Then it dries
all nasty white looking. The overspray is hard to get off of the swingarm
and wheel. Wonder if WD-40 penetrates the o-rings?

how much play is okay?
At 20,000, too many 3 gear wheelies and a few trips down the
dragstrip, I had a bunch of play in the cush drive too.
One of the gurus around here told me to stick some inner tube in
there.
I cut a narrow strip and poked it in the hub.
Works great and the dealer don't have a chance at the Hoss!
32,000 miles now,
Rod
