I am in the market to buy a new GPS system, as my old etrex is outdated. So which units have been most useful, as far as mapping detail, and routes while riding? I guess what I'm asking is which GPS unit, if any, is best suited for motorcycle travel, both on and off road? And which mapping software has been useful to you members? thanks.

If you've been happy with the etrex take a look at the GPSMAP60 series. Pat G'ville, NV

After buying and using them all, I vote for the Garmin 276C. By far the best, size, screen (see in sunlight), processor speed, autorouting, battery. I use Roads and Recreations for backroad riding (has the best dirt road maps), and I use City Select for paved road riding.

Most versatile is the Garmin 276C/376C Big screen Now has a 512MB Garmin card for it so good capacity Waterproof and well built Doubles very well as a marine unit (the primary use for it actually) Has battery power for portable use Does autorouting Downs for it You have to buy map software for useful street/autorouting Garmin charges for new software updates generally No touch screen, you have to navigate using the buttons. When entering an address this pretty much means you need to stop to do it. I have a handheld for abuse situations, offroad and in my kayak. For street riding and car use, I just got the Lowrance iWay 500C and love it. Ups for the iWay 500C Touchscreen, allows text entry and moving the map around with your finger, on the fly. It also allows you to 'poke' the map around and mark a destination...so you can tell the unit to 'Go' there or save it as an address book entry. Lots of customization options, including the ability to skin or theme the appearance. I already like the detail of Lowrance maps as I have a handheld unit of theirs. No added map uploading, it comes pre-loaded on a 20G hard drive, with 10G free for mp3 player use. Lowrance makes updates available for free. Waterproof/submersible Downs Touchscreen not a great idea if you get dirt and grit on the screen...can scratch it. No battery, must be used with a power source. You can get 12V socket battery packs but it's a component add-on. I narrowed it down to the Lowrance iWay 500C and the Garmin 2720 for my needs, both are outstanding, I felt the Lowrance had better geek appeal and I've had experience dealing with them for customer service already and like them. I won't take the iWay offroad however, it's too nice for that, I'll stick to my handheld for that mission. Check the equipment forum at http://www.advrider.com/ there are extensive threads for GPS info for dual-sport use.

Check out the Magellan eXplorist 500 GPS. Its color, SD card capabilities, and reasonable priced. MTC James Morrow Sr wrote: After buying and using them all, I vote for the Garmin 276C. Wonder if there is one that will serve me well in the dirt and also on the water in my boat in inland waters. Thanks, Rod --- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, James Morrow Sr wrote:

Full USA charts are also available for it. http://www.garmin.com/products/gpsmap276c/

The Garmin 276C/376C are primarily marine chartplotters. You actually have to buy add-on software for street navigation. It's one of the reasons it's a favorite for dual-sport use, the housing is solid and well sealed for marine use. The mount it comes with is for helm mounting in a boat. The XM satellite NEXRAD weather service is made for marine and aviation use, it just so happens it's handy for riding around too. That option is the difference between the 276 and 376, with the latter having it available.
