Hello, I have been a member of this list for awhile although I have never posted. By the way, the last name in the "From" header is miles off from the correct spelling. I don't know how it got that way and I don't know how to change it. For quite some time I have been saving money so I can quit my job and head off on an adventure for a year or more. Next summer will be the time I make my dream into a reality. During my long (SO long) planning (saving) stage I have considered many motorcycles, always coming back to the KLR650. I find the KLR so appealing because it seems so utterly practical, and I just may be able to work on it myself. The main concern I have about the KLR is the apparent doohicky problem. I don't understand why this issue hasn't been addressed by Kawasaki. Some time ago I wrote to the company asking about this matter and received a reply that they were not aware it was an issue. This got me looking at other bikes for awhile. Well, I am back to the KLR650, and while I wouldn't worry too much about the "doohicky" during the warranty period, I would like take care of it fairly soon. Here is one of my questions: how might I best go about this? Should I purchase the parts and try to find a mechanic who will install the parts? Is there someone on this list who does this for a reasonable price? If so, I would probably make that person's home/business one of my earlier stops during my travels. I will probably purchase a bicycle in May, after I have taken the Motorcycle Safety Course in April. I live in a suburb of Detroit and would appreciate hearing from fellow Michiganders (in my general area) about dealership recommendations. Thanks, Jerry Carignan

Folks on the board probaly make the doohickey sound worse than it is. That said, even if the doohickey only fails in 1 in 100 bikes it is not worth the risk when the fix is so cheap and simple. Winter is the best time to find good bikes cheap. You ought to start looking now. Buy your KLR650 and ride it for a while. Buy you the service manuals. Maybe find someone who has done it before to hold your hand and maybe loan you the tools. Decide the kind of modification if any you want to do before your adventure. If you are going off on a motorcycle adventure you need to be able to work on the bike yourself. Doing such things as replacing the doohickey, adjusting the valves, changing oil and filter, etc. is good practice and allows you to get an idea of the kind and quality of tools you need to take on your adventure. I appreciate the responses to my post. I especially appreciate David Farrell's offer of assistance. Thank you. It's a bit tough going into a winter. This may be the best time to shop for motorcycles, but I don't have a place to store one, except outdoors next to my apartment, so I won't be making a purchase until the spring. What I have done is order a DVD from Whitehorse Gear which demonstrates valve adjustment, and changing a tire. Viewing the DVD should give me a good idea of whether I am up to the tasks myself. I want to be as independent of dealership mechanics as possible. Jerry Carignan/Michigan

Seems to be a bigger problem on bikes with installed center stands. --Jim A-15
