Hi All,
4 miles into my 20 mile commute home I heard a strange noise and when
I tried to shift to 3rd gear all I could get was 1 shift to neutral
above 2nd gear.
I was able to ride home in 2nd no problems, 1st neutral and 2nd all
shifted normal.
The day before I had changed my oil and on my into my ride to work I
had gone on reserve all was OK.
3000 miles ago I installed a new doohicky and spring. The old doohicky
was broken and a small pice was missing.
It looks like I will have to split the case to get at the tranny.
Any words of wisdom?
I guess I should pull the right side cover to see if I can see
anything.
If I have to pull the motor is there any other maintenance I should
do ? New bearings, full gasket kit.
My 1999 A13 has 24K miles on it.
I have a 89 A3 parts bike that I will probley pull apart for
trainning.
At least I was able to get my summer run in and I have time to get it
ready for next year.
Looks like I'll be riding the Vision for now.
Thanks,
James

Whoa, wait a minute. You're jumping to conclusions here. gotta
eliminate the easy stiff first.
Many riders have seen the stock shift lever break at the base weld.
This doesn't always happen, but you should at least remove your stock
unit and inspect the quality of the weld. call/email fred @ arrowhead
motorsports if it's just the gear shifter, he'll fix you up fast.

I wish that was the answer.
The shift lever is solid as is the mounting to the shaft.
I am running a aftermarket shift lever, Moose I think.
I have had the stock POS lever weld give out on me and I carry a spair
just in case.
When I shift the lever is not hitting the case.
I will remove and check the shift lever in the light of day, Thanks
for the idea Conall.

You don't happen to have a lever saver cable installed on your shifter do
you?
The device I'm referring to is a small cable installed between the forward
end of the shift lever and the frame. (They are also useful on the brake
pedal)
The purpose of the lever saver is to prevent small trees and branches from
being pulled between the lever and the engine case which can bend the lever
or break off.
On two occasions a branch has pulled the cable rearward and jammed it so the
shifter would downshift OK, select neutral from first OK but second gear
was difficult to get. The shifter would no locate third, fourth or fifth.
Why second and not the others? No idea, but really makes me wonder. I'll bet
a guy wouldn't be able to install a cable to do this!
When this has happened it was only necessary to reach under and push the
cable back into position and all was right in Shifts Ville.
Hope this is all that your problem amounts to.

Since you are doing the maint. anyway...... Remove the swingarm and grease them bearings, then the chain can come off without cutting a link. 106 link chain is without a masterlink.
