carburator issues, wot surges

Post by klr650tiger » Tue Sep 13, 2005 1:33 pm

I have a K&N stage II, a big bug exhaust, and K&N filter on my bike at the moment. The problem I have is that at WOT on the hyway, I experience a surge similar to when the bike runs out of gas and you switch to the reserve. The problem is so bad the the bike actually dies, but as soon as I step back a bit on the throttle, the bike comes back to life and runs, although I only reach speeds of about 75. The problem has gotten worse as I just recently changed my front sprocket to a 14 tooth, which forces me to wide open the throttle more often. Head winds also mess me up, since I slow down and need to WOT. I took the carb apart, and found it a bit dirty, so I cleaned it but still did not help. I noticed that my diaphram is warped, not pierced or cracked but warped. I was wondering if that has to do something with it. My assumption is that it worped because of the carb cleaner. Any suggestions on what I can do. I am even thinking about changing the Carb and buy a new one. By the way my bike has 70K miles, and it is a 98 model. At any other speeds, gears, and iddle the bike runs perfect. thanks in advance for any help.

It really sounds like a bad diaphragm, but it could be bad gas, dirt in the carb or even something in your fuel tank. If I was going to place a bet, I'd say it was the diaphragm. Since you admit to using carb cleaner on it, and it looks like it's mis-shaped. New Diaphragm's can be found for as little as $40 on the net. If you need a URL search the archives since the URL was posted in the last two weeks, or I can send on to you. HtH, Denis

carburator issues, wot surges

I tried to post a message on this yesterday but I didn't see it on the list. I hope I emailed you personally about rejetting the carb. Did your problem start after right after you installed the exhaust system? Bill --- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, "klr650tiger" wrote:

klr car carriers

Post by sbcglobal » Wed Sep 14, 2005 4:36 pm

I have a generic "up to 700 lb motorcycle rack" that slides into my class III hitch. Got it on e-bay. Could have built it myself for much cheaper if I had the time and inclination. Hauled my bike to CO and back with it in August. Worked very well. The reason I like the rack over a trailer is that in CA there are many roads posted "Trucks/Cars with Trailers 55 MPH; Cars 65 MPH". My wife got a ticket on Hiway 395 just north of Red Mountain about a year ago, exceeding the speed limit with a trailer. She wasn't very happy with me. We had just switched drivers.... Chuck

Sure would hate to crash my bike if I > ain't on it, that would take all the fun out of it!!!! I've been using a MotoTote on the back of an '03 Chevy Siverado Long bed standard cab for a couple years now. I at first used it to haul my DRZ400S about and later my KLR650 about to Big Bend, Arkansas, Tennessee, N. Carolina etc as a means to beat the heat by doing the long boring streches in an Air Condioned truck to pamper my 62 year old carcuss. ;-).. The pluses over a trailer is not having to worry about trailer tires or parking it while out riding about the country side. Easy to load the bike if you make sure to deflate the Air shocks or Air bags which you will really need to keep your lights down on the road and out of on coming traffic's eyes unless you adjust your lights after loading. Also the Air assist keeps the front of the vehical from having that Hunting feel with the bike on back. The centerline of the ramp is genearlly 18" behind the bumper so that's putting the weight kinda far back. I also make sure I'm near empty in the KLR gas tank and carry a 5 gal gas can and keep it up against the cab in the bed as with all other stuff I'm carring with me to help keep some weight forward. One of the other minuss on this particualr set up is that it only has front tie downs and the bike will make this thing wobble side to side with the or front to back in relation with the truck. I slowed this down with an extra bike sling attached to the rear bumper and the handlebar also. I probably have about 5000 miles of hauling the bikes about with this set up and have not had any problems with it yet. I do plan on adding an extra 2" square tubing to the rear to try to help stablize this side to side action more. But putting it as a bolt on thing after the unit is loaded as to not add weight in handling it.
