loose bolts & bedlining

My boyfriend, John Lyon, is a KLR rider and member of this list. He has been working nonstop since before Katrina at the New Orleans airport and will finally be getting off for the first time on the 19th. I am going to New York city next week, and he will be coming to meet me there. As a surprise, I would like to arrange for him to ride, since it always helps him decompress. He's mentioned that there is some good offroad riding north of the city. Any pointers on renting a motorcyle and safety gear for a day or two? Possible or not? Any advice would be appreciated. There are a couple of nuts behind the tail light reflector that secure the inner fender, check those if things are loose back there after too much washboard. --Jim A-15
