Does anyone here have any experience with the Garmin Quest 2? I'd be particularly interested in the difference between the Quest 2 and the Quest. The "2" is a lot more expensive. Thanks... The Quest 2 has all the maps built in on a solid state memory device where the original Quest only has 115mb of memory for you to upload the detailed maps that you need. The Quest has all of the base maps pre-installed, but to get all the local streets, you need to upload the detailed maps from your computer. - Rich

Tom, I've had the Quest for about three weeks. I am glad I went with that model for two reasons. One, it's significantly cheaper. Two, I've read that although the entire map is built in to the Quest 2, it does not come with the mapsource map to load onto a computer. This is a big hindrance for planning trips. Yes, you can plan on the GPS itself, but it's a lot easier on a full size monitor. So, if you don't already own a copy of the mapsource map, plan on adding an additional $100 onto the price of the Quest 2. The other thing I wondered about but don't know the answer to is how to upgrade the built in map when a new version comes out. I haven't seen any mention of this, but didn't look too hard due to points one and two above. This is my first GPS and I'm very glad I finally broke down and bought one. Even though I work in a technology field, I like the idea of keep it simple and this is why I held off for so long. Even now, I carry a full size map for planning while on the road so I can see the big picture. Small screens do have their limits. Steve Thomas Kelsey wrote:

I currently have a Garmin GPSMAP 60C (my 4th Garmin), all of the different Mapsource CDs (TOPO, World, US Roads and Rec, City Select) and use a RAM mount. I have always liked the functionality of handheld and vehicle mount. The biggest problem with all of these (including the Quest) is the basemap, which is NOT upgradeable. The operating system is, but none of the maps are. Even my newest one (less than 6 months old) has a few years old info that does not show newly cut roads and exit info. I have talked to Garmin about this and they told me they update thier info every few years and install it only in current devices / CDs. So you must either buy a new one/Mapsource CDs after a few years or deal with old info. Sean
