I took my KLR to the dealer for 3000 mile service (oil change) and a
steel braided front brake line. When I picked up the bike, the first
thing I noticed was the heads of the two screws on the front brake
fluid reservoir were stripped. I told the service rep to replace
them which he did. That made me very concerned; why would a
reputable dealer return a bike to a customer with the screw heads
very badly stripped? It's been a week since I picked up the bike and
I am noticing a very subtle loss of power. The bike just doesn't
feel the same. I always up-shift at 4000 rpms. For some reason, when
I shift from 4th to 5th, the bike is lugging bad. I also notice that
the oil level seems a bit high. I know that it's supposed to be
above the sight glass when bike is level, but this seems to be a
little bit more above the sight glass than normal. The other thing I
made a note of was the mechanic took it out for a test ride for a
total of 5 miles. Hmmmmm, 5 miles? OK, maybe he wanted to make
absolutely sure the new front brake line was functioning properly,
but 5 miles seems a bit much for a test ride. Anyone have any
theories why my bike luggs in 5th when shifting from 4th at 4000
RPMs? It never did that before I brought it in for the 3000 mile
service. The bike just doesn't feel the same as it did before I
brought it in for service. IF the mechinac that took it out for a
test ride red-lined it, could that explain it? I'm thinking,
stripped screw heads, loss of power; maybe some rookie disguntled
mechanic was taking his frustrations out on my bike. I'm afraid to
go back to the dealer.

problems after 3000 mile service.
I can't say for sure what the problem is but I sure as hell would take it
back there and demand some satisfaction.
Keep your eyes on all these threads and start doing your maintenance
yourself. There's not much maintenance on these machines.
Warranty's still apply with "do it yourselfers" as long as you save your
receipts. And for goodness sake WRITE DOWN EVERYTHING YOU DO AND THE DATE
YOU DO IT ON AND MILEAGE. Make sure your dates correspond with your
receipts.

problems after 3000 mile service.
Could be a number of things, but the first things I would check is that both wheels spin freely when off the ground. Also check to make sure chain isn't to tight. I believe a good check for chain tension is that while the bike is on the side stand, you should be able to just touch the bottom of the swingarm when pushing up on the chain.

thanks for the advice
The other thing to think about is that your new bike will have zero miles on
the bearings, brake rotor and tires. So you should expect more life
remaining from these items that you would see if you bought a typical 40K
mile bike.
