klr650 storage question...
I depart Tues for a 6-7 month deployment to Iraq - I have a 2005
KLR650 that I am putting up in my garage...
I am getting conflicting guidance on fuel -
Clymer states to drain the tank, use a small amount of motor oil to
protect the inside from rust.
Other sources state a full tank with STABIL... (that is what I a
doing with my truck)
Both state run with the fule cock off until the engine runs the gas
out...understand that.
Need some guidance - full or empty?
Rest of the stuff is easy, taking the plug out, squirt of oil and spin
it to keep the rings from sticking to the cyl. liner. Batt on a
charger and on a center stand off the tires, which are lowered in
pressure.
Thanks in advance!

Either way works. For the amount of time you are talking about, I would use
the full tank/Stabil route. Much longer and I would drain it. Good luck
over there and come back safe.

klr650 storage question...
I'd drain the gas from the tank and add oil because
Stabil only treats the gas not the tank itself. Rust
prevention is the reason for the oil coating inside
the tank.

I forgot to mention that I'd drain it.

klr650 storage question...
I have always kept the tank full plus Sta-Bil. A mechanic once told me to remove / open the carb drain plug and leave it open / out. This is what I do and it seems to work fine. Once I close the carb drain, and put the battery back in, the Bikes starts as if it was rode the day before. The KLR is the first bike I've had with a vacuum petcock that doesn't have a prime position, so I imagine the quick first start up won't go so well.

Sean, treat the fuel with StaBil, run the bike for a while to get the StaBil-treated fuel all the way through the fuel system, then turn the petcock off and allow the engine to run until it dies. Top off the fuel tank as full as you can get it to minimize the amount of air/moisture that can exist inside. Also, I'd recommend putting the battery on a smart trickle charger if you have one; otherwise, just disconnect it and make sure the cells have the right amount of distilled water in them.
