vibration and gps

Post by r_d_r_a_k_e » Mon Aug 29, 2005 1:59 pm

I have a Garmin GPS 60cs attached with a Ram mount to the handlebars. It appears that at around 64mph (5K-ish rpms) on certain road surfaces (concrete, rough asphalt), the GPS powers off. It seems as though road surface matters since the GPS stays on at higher rpms in lower gears. I adjusted the arm of the Ram mount to be close to 90 degrees from the piston travel and saw better results, however, I still have the GPS power off every 10 minutes or so. Has anyone come up with a solution to reducing vibration in Ram mounts? Would a bar snake or lead shot reduce vibration toward the middle of the bars? It seems that the weight near the ends would deaden the vibes near the grips. TIA

Using hardwire power or batteries?

I mounted mine to my left arm, my FAMZZ jacket has a stout strap below the elbow that I nylon tied it to, sorta like a wrist watch, works perfect! --- r_d_r_a_k_e wrote:

Batteries for now. I will hardwire it if that will fix the issue. J Fortner wrote:

I have the GPS60 hard wired and batteries at the end of a 2200 mile trip it had to go back to Garmin. It still worked on 12 volt plug but would not run on batteries reliably. It was internal and Garmin fixed it. I mounted mine with the Garmin bicycle mount on the crossbar to make up the difference in diameter I used a rubber bushing. Not much vibration to the unit from what I can tell. I thought for a while it was the batteries losing connection but after holding the batteries in and bumping the unit it would still cut off. Since I've got it back it's worked perfectly. I keep it on the bike all the time. This time the unit has about 3000 mostly road miles on it. Later John A-18

The guys at Cycoactive "hardened" mine by insulating the circuit board and runging a couple of beads of silicone on teh inside of the battery cover to lodge thenm in place. My eMap has 20k miles on it and no problems, unless you count me wiring the 12V socket on my KLR like a lop. http://www.cycoactive.com Thanks CA Stu

I have a Garmin mounted to the crossbar with a Touratech mount. It is hard wired and works fine, however the vibration always seems to kill the batteries afer several hours, when I put in fresh ones it works again.......so I would suggest hard wiring it. BTW my bars are full of #8 bird shot. Craig A18 San Jose CA

Just get hold of Garmin (I forget if I called or emailed or what) and they will send you (for free!) a little spring deal that goes between the inner and outer batteries. This applies some extra tensions so the contacts can't vibrate and has completely eliminated vibration problems for me. I also have the Touratech mount btw. -- Craig Morris Fernie, B.C., Canada

r_d_r_a_k_e, I use a Garmin eTrex Legend in a Ram mount on my bike. Cycoactive suggests using dielectric grease on the batteries if used on a motorcycle. I use that and a power cord. Might be worth trying a healthy dab of the dielectric grease and maybe some electrical tape to hold the batteries tight.
