using footpeg to mount bike?

Post by Ed Chait » Sun Jul 17, 2005 6:27 am

Has anyone ever damaged their sidestand or anything else from using the left footpeg to stand on when getting on their bike? I've lost some flexibility as I get older, and with the top case, this is by far the easiest way for me to get on, but I weigh about 200 lb. and I'm concerned about pranging the sidestand. ed A17

I know that a bunch of folk use that method; I sure do (190lb). One other variable in the equation is the angle of the bike on the side stand which will vary if you use lowering links and can then be re-adjusted by shortening the side stand. Personally I suspect that it is *very* unlikely to cause a problem. -- Doug Herr doug@...

That is how I get on and off the KLR. No worries it will not hurt the sidestand.

Biggest risk is the stand breaking through a soft surface during a mount. I'd weld a larger pad to the bottom of the stand to make it less likely.

using footpeg to mount bike?

I wouldn't really worry about it. Over the last 3 seasons with over 55,000 kms on 2 KLRs I have used that mode of mounting most of the time without any problems. Just make sure that the sidestand is standing on something firm and once you step onto the peg, lean your weight over to the right side of the bike so that all of your 200 lbs doesn't push down on the left side of the bike. Due to a torn groin muscle, I have had the same problem over the last few years. Having passed over the 60 mark doesn't help much either, so the right hind leg has a bit of trouble getting up over the high seat, and it is impossible with my Wolfman pack on the back, but as mentioned, I haven't had any problems and I am hoisting 210 lbs without gear, so probably 225 when in ATTGAT mode. I also have a center stand which makes it a little more safe when I put it up on that, which is when I gas up so it is standing up level and I can check the oil level. I don't step on the left side foot peg but rather lean against something solid like a gas pump then throw my foot up on the saddle between the tank bag and my luggage, a few hops and the right leg slides over and I lean the bike upright and lift the side stand. Alan Henderson A13 Iowa

Thanks to all listers who provided feedback. Hopping over the box from behind really didn't seem like a very good idea:). Regards, ed A17

Have you ever caught your pant leg on the little loop of metal near the rear peg? I have almost dropped it that way about a dozen times... --- Alan L Henderson wrote:

Sidestand is pretty darn strong. People routinely jam a stick under the right rear to tilt the bike onto the sidestand in order to get the back tire off the ground so they can oil it or etc. The only thing I'd worry about is if you're parked on hot asphalt. If you mount the bike via the footpeg, you may find your sidestand pronging a hole into the asphalt and you going down under the bike unless you're rather nimble and jump out from under it before it falls. Note: KLR's take falls well, as long as you suitably armor it first. If it's a choice between letting the KLR fall and you getting stuck under a 400 pound pig of a motorcycle, let the KLR fall. Any damage you do to it will be far cheaper than a broken leg or other possible injury. _E

I check that the stand is on solid ground first, then I grab the right handlebar and apply the brake. This causes me to put some weight on the right, and keep balanced. -- GW >On Sun, 17 Jul 2005, Ed Chait wrote: >> Has anyone ever damaged their sidestand or anything else from using the left >> footpeg to stand on when getting on their bike? > >> far the easiest way for me to get on, but I weigh about 200 lb. and I'm >> concerned about pranging the sidestand. > >Sidestand is pretty darn strong.
