Is anybody using the new FMF Q muffler on their KLR? I'd like to upgrade my pipes but want to keep it as quiet as the origional. The SupperTrap factory is right around the corner from me, but I've never been sold on them. Jardine? Class - anybody? Munroe

I've been using the FMF Q muffler about 4 months and have been pleased. No problems with the build quality. The pipe is quiet when compared to the IDS or Laserpro, but it is louder than the stock pipe. While FMF recommends repacking the muffler every 10-20 hours of use, I've got close to 100 hours without any noticeable increase in sound. I figure the repacking is going to be an annual maintenance thing, no worse than that. Pat G'ville, NV

You know, I still need to get me a digital camera. I've got my analog 35mm SLR and I'm just waiting for the price of the digital EOS Rebel body to come down. Its an oval can, it is about 6" shorter than the IDS. You need to make sure you mount it with the spacers so it stays outboard the rear brake nipple. The rear bulkhead is welded to the pipe and the can bolts to it. This is where you take it apart for repacking (with the pipe clamped to the head pipe so you can wiggle the can off). The rear as an insert that provides the spark arrestor and low noise. Take the insert out and you have a loud competition pipe. There are two clamps for mounting the can to both brackets used by the OEM pipe. Very solid when mounted up. If you are running the top of the line HT side racks this pipe clears the rear bumper mounting bracket, Recommend peeling off the FMF Q stickers before they start to burn. Pat Gville, NV

Pat, I'm interested in one as well. Could you please elaborate some more on the sound/performance changes? -Does it give you more power? At the low end or top end? -Did you have to rejet? -Did the exhaust note sound better? On that last question, I'm referring more to whether the exhaust note sounds deeper/throatier as opposed to just plain louder. I don't like loud exhausts but I do want my KLR to sound more 'macho', if you know what I mean. Maurice Oz

It is on par with the other pipes. My seat of the pants says it could be better power than the Cobra or IDS. Nothing fantistic, but perhaps noticable in a slightly higher speed creasting familar hills.

Yes, but it is using the same jetting I had for the IDS.

Definately deeper, it has that destinctive thumper note while still being noticabley quieter than the LaserPro (had MikeT's pipe to compare noise level's to this weekend). What you have is a basic glass pack with a spark arrestor on the end. Pat G'ville, NV

Hi Pat The last thing I'd want to be accused of is starting a forest fire by using a non stock pipe. Does this pipe have a spark arrestor? Is it approved? (or stamped as having a spark arrestor? Does the state/condition of the packing material affect the performance of the spark arrestor? TIA I got a rat Barbie that looks like it might get a new pipe soon. Thanks Fred Judging from the picture on your site, it looks like the FMF Q series is just the muffler portion of the exhaust, true? Assuming the head pipe on my rat is shot, is there an aftermarket alternative to the factory head pipe? I'm looking to begin the evaluation/restoration process on this bike approx 4th Qtr 05. Yes, the FMF Q Series comes with just the muffler and connector pipe (one piece). I am sure that the Big Gun head pipe should fit the FMF pipe but I don't know of anyone that has this combination. Fred www.arrowheadmotorsports.com
