hub question again

as the military are now getting their stocks of diesel klr's in i wonder if they will be selling off their stock of gas powered ones or if they will just break them up for spare parts? although im sure they will prob just be sold to some other countries military.

There are no military gas powered KLRs. The diesel conversion is carried out by a company in Hesperia CA called Hayes Engineering (if I remember correctly). They bump up the compression in the motor and change out some of the body parts and other misc. pieces. Dual Star sells off the removed body parts, stock shock, gas tank (they use an IMS tank), tires, etc. This whole issue was beat to death on this list a couple of years ago, and it was covered in Dual Sport News ( > -----Original Message-----

Did you go to the DOD site? They claim those are KLR 250's. Those do not look like 250's. Got me googling the Marine bikes - low and behold, they were using KLR 250's for awhile - but I couldn't find out if the 650's are actually being used in field ops yet. The DOD site claims these pics were taken during Operation Iraqi Freedom - so we've got KLR 650's running around Iraq. Wouldn't that be an Adventure ride!!

Those are most definitely KLR 650's. As far as I know there are no longer any KLR 250's in service, and these have a rear rack which the KLR 250 does not have. The KLR 250's had a rack with round tubes (added to militarize the bike since the KLR 250 has no rack from the factory), not the KLR-style rack with the "handles" that I see on at least one of these bikes. The gas tank used on the military KLR 250 also has bolt-on shrouds, rather than the integrated shrouds on the IMS tanks on these bikes. http://home.earthlink.net/~klr250informationexchange/military.htm has info on the military KLR 250's. -E
