low cost carry box

Post by Mike Peplinski » Wed May 25, 2005 11:01 am

I've alwayts had a need to use my bike as a pick up. As a result some sort of carrying device is essential. I really don't want to ride with the big side cases but a rack case in back was a must. Most of the ones I found were pretty expensive. I was using a packpack strapped to the rack. It worked well but was a real pain. In my quest to do things my own way, aka cheap-to-free, I began looking for some sort of box, that was big enough but not too big, rugged, not effected by cold (freezing) temps, not real ugly, closable and paintable. Something about the size of a large bread box but not a bread box-too flimsy. I searched and couldn't find something that was right. The old "milk carton case" was about the right size but no lid and really ugly. Resourceful is OK but somehow I really don't like the milk carrier. At a local rumage I found just what I was looking for; a 5 gallon RV water tank. Its made of polyethylene, so it won't crack in the cold, just the right size too. I sawed the top off about 1 inch down and riveted a hinge on. I painted it with Krylon Fusion and it seems to hold up. A couple of strategically drilled holes and I can bungee it on securely and remove it if a have to. It even looks pretty good.

I have a similar story. My cairn terrier likes to go riding with me on my KLR. I strap her "sherpa bag" (looks like a duffel bag with netting so the dog can get fresh air and look around) to the rear rack. I was over at Target the other day and saw something better. Ever see those ~~ $350 italian leather bags that Vespa people strap to the rear racks of their scooters? I saw a dog carrier at Target the other day for $49 that looks real similar to the Italian leather item.

low cost carry box

Post by Michael Silverstein » Sun May 29, 2005 7:04 am

I needed a box just large enough to carry some extra tools, spare tube, maps, sandwiches, digital camera and a folded backpack. I ended up bolting a $4.99 plastic toolbox on to the rack. The colors even matched my A18. Here's some pictures: [www.mindspring.com/~mssilverstein/motor ... 50/toolbox] Mike A18

Mike, Looks GOOD! Matches WELL! I might do something like that with my A1. I received my doohickey kit from Fred yesterday - might install it this afternoon. Scott --- Michael Silverstein wrote:
