nklr ticks

Post by Michael Silverstein » Mon May 30, 2005 11:19 am

Just got back from a ride in the woods that included some tall grass and discovered about ten ticks crawling or feeding on me. Any advise on dissuading the little buggers from hitching a ride? I'm about to get a couple of dog flea and tick collars and put them in my jacket and pants pockets. Mike A18 -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Deep Woods Off or Hartz Flea and Tick Repellent for dogs (no, I'm not kidding). Look for the sprays that have the highest percentage of DEET. gotta lotta ticks in this part of PA. I usually don't mind the little buggers, you can see them and pick 'em off. It's the really little ones that carry Lyme Disease, which I have had once already (caught it early, cured) Mike

Depending on how much back hair you have, you could get the Frontline drops. You just can't bathe for a couple weeks after application. --- Mike Frey wrote:

Internationally, a product called "Permethrin" is widely used, including by the military. It's a supposedly non-toxic chemical you spray on your clothes. It lasts for several washings. Some company's, like rei, are now selling bug clothes treated with it. As recommended by my travel doctor, I used it on a recent trip to the Ecuadorian coast. I believe it actually kills bugs, it's not just a repellent. Charles --- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, Kelly Walsh wrote:

Just be sure to apply it an area that you can't lick.

Lyme disease is bad. Friend of mine at work SOMEHOW picked it up out here in California. It's really rare out here. Took her a LONG time to get over it. She's okay now, but she was in a bad situation. Problem was none of the docs out here had ever seen it so they were treating her for a hundred other ailments... You can probably get the permethrin at any army-navy store...(yellow can with bright green cap)..spray your clothes, let it dry a day (outside), then you're good to go. We used it in the Army before some jungle training in central america a few years back - worked pretty good.

That sounds perfect. I can just spray it on my riding clothes. Thanks, Mike A18

DEET-based aerosol spray. Spray your clothing, and it'll last all day. The little buggers just drop right off when they find that you smell of OFF. Don't get the high-DEET spray, it can stain your clothing, just the regular old aerosol "OFF" or generic equivalent works quite well. _E
