klr tires & chain

Post by a phipps » Sat Apr 09, 2005 11:09 pm

Hello, It has been a few years since I've been active on the list. Having kids has cut back on the time I can dedicate to riding. I hope to get out for a bit of a trip this summer. Before I go, the KLR will need some new tires and chain & sprockets. I've gone through a couple sets of Avon Gripsters and have been happy with them. However, I seem to remember that there were some concerns about the Gripsters (cracking?). What is the current tire of choice for the KLR if I'm going to be doing mainly street riding (80%)? As well, I'd be interested in any recommendations for a high quality chain. I'm also thinking about ordering the dohickey upgrade. How many hours of shop time would it take to do if I took it into a dealer to do? Thanks Al A10, Fort St. John, BC PS: Any of you passing through Fort St. John on your way to Alaska this summer should contact me off list. It would be great to join you for a day of riding or get together to talk bikes over a beer. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Small Business - Try our new resources site! klr tires & chain

I doubt there is anything wrong with Avon Gripsters considering the number of people using them. All tires crack a bit with age. I am using Pirelli MT90 S/T. They handle well on the street and will tolerate dirt roads and such. They last also, last rear went 13,000 miles. You can get a D.I.D. 520VM chain from http://www.kneedraggers.com/details/13-DID-VMX for $89. You probably also need to replace the front sprocket. The O.E.M. rear will usually outlast a couple of chains. As far as the dealer doing a doohickey install, I would guess an hour or two but I think I would take my bike to the Three Stooges before the local dealer. My dealer didn't know that the KLR had a counterbalance system much less a doohickey. A Phipps wrote: Hello, It has been a few years since I've been active on the list. airbox plate?

Post by dindolino32 » Sun Apr 10, 2005 12:10 pm

I have been reassembling my KLR650 and have run into a problem... I dont remember where this part goes. I searched the part on kawasaki.com and it is called the airbox plate. I cannot make sense of the diagram (I am a novice) and dont know where, or how it goes back on. The part number is 13183-1118 . If anyone has some pictures or can describe clearly to a novice such as myself, I would really appreciate it. Thank you very much dan
