mechanical seal

Does anyone have any experience changing the mechanical seal for the water pump? How far should the seal be pushed into the case and how tightly and with type of instrument should you pound the other seal into the case, the seal with the aluminum case that goes over the mechanical seal and is pressed in by the impeller.

Uhmmmm, Could you post a pic?? Actually my G/F (yes guys she welds!!!) and I are thinking about building racks and brush guards for KLRs and a couple of other bikes. Going to prototype a luggage rack for the KLR first then build a jig from the proto....
