stripped foot peg bolts

Post by Svantwuyver » Wed Oct 01, 2003 3:36 pm

I think Heli coils for the foot peg is a band-aid solution. I would consider using a helicoil if I needed to get by for a while. The original nuts are only tack welded inside the box, they are not the normal thickness for that size and they seem to be made of extremely soft steel. I followed Dualstar's sollotion to this problem as provided by Mike. He suggested to cut the footpeg box face off with a Dremel tool and a cutoff wheel. Make all cuts at 45 degrees so that you re-fitting is easy. Cut the original nuts off and tack new ones in their place while bolted to the footpeg face that was just cut off. With the footpeg temporarily in bolted on, alignment will be correct. Then tack the face back on and check it for correct position with the footpeg in place. Then weld the entire face of the footpeg holder back on. It cost me about $70 for someone to Tig weld it. Now you have two full sized nuts holding everything in place. The downsides are it takes a little time to cut the face off and probably more expensive than helicoil. It did minimal paint damage. -svt- -svt- __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? stripped foot peg bolts

Folks, I need the sage advice of the KLR community once again. The threads in the frame appear to be stripped on one side and therefore the bolts that hold the foot peg don't stick. What can I do about this? Thanks Ryan KNEVLKLR A-18 NYC

Many of us have been there. The cheap & easy fix is to drill & tap for a 10mm x 25mm bolt, widen the holes on the mount to 10mm and use a dished lockwasher. This will hold up to almost any abuse, even Tumuing, but sometimes not Zacking or occasional Devoning. Forget the time & expense of a Helicoil. If you're gonna rip out a 10mm bolt, you're gonna rip out a Helicoil too. Whatever you do, don't drill through the frame for a longer bolt and back it with a nut like the horse's ass previous owner of one of my bikes did. Mark

The preferred method is to drill out the holes, re-tap and install larger bolts. But in a pinch, as in the middle of Baja, you can just weld it on to the frame. BTW, are you using an aftermarket center stand? Paul Streeter Shoreview, Minnesota

I do have a center stand from dual star. Maybe I should use a little be longer replacement bolt once I drill and tap it to compensate for the added length as result of the centerstand? Thanks for the input all.

FWIW, be careful that the bolts aren't too long and bottom out on the frametube behind the threads. Make sure the bolts can be tightened completely. Dualstar warns against using locktite here as the threaded nuts are only spot welded and could potentially break-off when removing. If memory serves me right, I used 30mm aftermarket allenhead bolts with my DS centerstand. With one flat washer and one lockwasher between the bolthead and peg bracket, there was only ~1mm left between the tip of the bolt and the frame tube after fully tightening (it's hard to see in there). One reason may be that it would then drop a lot of users. I don't like web based forums much. I really don't think I would keep up with this group if it did not have an e-mail option. I use USENET, and do like that for threaded forums, but I have yet to find a web based forum that works as well as my USENET reader, so again, I just don't follow any web forums. For the Net newbies: USENET is the stuff that you see with google groups. -- Doug Herr doug@...
