I just got my 1987 KLR 650 and love it to death, but trail ridding can
be a work out on the clutch. Now I checked the FAQ's on final drive,
but they were talking about the front sprocket. Right now the slowest
I can go in first is 10MPH, too fast. Also, 100 MPH is top end on the
road, again, too fast. So, as you can guess, my question is ,what is
the best ratio of sprockets for the 650? I want mostly trail ridding,
some highway and the gears I have now are 15-43. What does everyone
else run?

question on gear ratios?
I'm running 15/39 and find that I can get down to about 10 mph without using the clutch. I seldom get on anthing more challenging than a fire road. You can change the front sproket for a 14T for about $20. You can go up 2 teeth on the rear without altering the chain.

question on gear ratios?
Geoffrey,
I do tight woods and fire road riding only with my KLR. I'm running a 14T
front sprocket and a JT Steel 47 tooth rear,
http://www.throttlehead.com/catalog/dirt/ , Part # JT48747. It requires a
longer chain, 110 link, but it helps with the tight riding. I would still
like lower gearing due to the type riding. With the '95 I've got, there's a
13T front, but like your '87, the factory bolt on retainer would have to be
replace with an E clip. I wasn't too fond of that idea so I stayed with the
14T.

I was gonna buy one, but I was told that both cylinders fire at the same time and it vibrates more then a KLR650. but from what I read on the subject, it has an offset crank and is supose to fir like a normal 90 degree v-twin @ 270/450 looks like a cool bike, I think they only came to the states 1 or 2 years in the earley 90's> Anyone familiar with the Yamaha TDM850 ? > > Know of any aftermarket parts for it? > > (mandatory KLR content) Wish I also had a new KLR too. > > Oldrice- > www.oldrice.com
