99 klr w/3000 miles
Went and looked at a 1999 KLR650 with only 3000 miles at a dealer
today.I wasn't real impressed with the dealer-they had apparently
done nothing to the bike in preperation to selling it.Examples:the
right mirror was all bent around so you got a good view of your left
shoulder;the clutch cable was really sticky-like you need king kong
forearms to pull the clutch lever. They are asking $3000.00 for the
bike.I don't know how the PO got the handgrips in such bad shape with
only 3000 miles. They look worn out.Theres sign of rusty stain coming
off the water pump, but it didn't seem to be leaking when I ran
it.The plastic hand protectors were in poor shape-one broken. There
was various little dings and scratches etc.The engine did look pretty
new, other than the rust stain, and ran well.I took it for a test
ride. The engine, or, at least, the temp gauge was running much to the
hot side, unlike my 2001 KLR250, which rareley gets over half way by
the temp gauge.I wouldn't be surprised if the coolant was low and the
shop may not have even checked it.The tags were expired, but I took
it out on the street anyway, as I've always wanted to test ride a
KLR650.
All the lights worked, and, as I said, it ran well (except for
the water temp).I'm not sure, but I think the handlebars may be bent
a little bit.
But I can see why people think the KLR650 is a nice ride.It
seemed to have enough power to get the job done, and seemed
comfortable to me.
I think I'm going to go see another dealer with new ones to see
what kind of deal they would make me with my 250 in trade.
Does anyone think this bike might be an okay deal at $3000.00?I
guess the biggest question would be the engine temp running too high-
the other stuff is either fixable, or not that big of a deal. And 3000
miles is 3000 miles. My 2001 KLR250 with 8000 miles is in WAY better
shape though-with no scratches, dings, dents or anything.

Nah, sounds like it was not well kept, and the rust
stains could be a sign of severe internal damage (bad
pump, ground up in system. Check Ebay and be patient)
Esp a 5 year old bike with 3000 miles it likely sat
for a long time and all seals, grommets, etc are shot.
I saw a sweet one on Ebay today for $1500, take your
time and if you dont know what to look for get a
freind or delaer who does... And yes, the KLR is a
great ride.

99 klr w/3000 miles
Jon, that's pricey. Just yesterday I bought a 2004 KLR650 from a
private party. $3600. Only 990 miles, extremely fresh. Even came
with shop manuals, a bike lift, and didn't have to pay any tax like
you would at a dealer.
I've been watching eBay for a month to get a feel for price vs.
model year. I watched 2000-2005 bikes, so I can't help you
with '99s. But the three 2000 bikes that sold recently went for:
$2750 (5K miles, looked quite nice)
$2500 (6K miles, also looked nice)
$2000 (3K miles, a tad ratty for my tastes)
Just be patient, the right bike is out there for you. You can
afford to be picky.

Bought a 2004 from a dealer with 1300 miles and 10 months left on factory
warranty. $4300 taxes tags and title transfer. I had been surfing the net
and watching eBay and calling around to dealers within a couple hundred
miles. You can find a better deal, be patient ride the 250 till a nice one
turns up.

NO, it sounds like the bike sat outside for a long time. not good. without seeing it in person, i think $2300 is what it might be worth. Around here, N.Cali, you can sometimes find a used 2003 for $3500 with under 10,000 miles. And bikes cost a lot in the S.F. I paid only 2,100.00 for a 98 (A-12) with just over 3,000 miles on it. By the time I finished putting on new tires, fork seals and valve adjustment it cost about $2,600.00. I still think I got a good deal. It's given me almost 7,000 miles of use and it runs like it did the day I picked it up from the shop. Although it too was a bit banged-up by the previous owner.
Good riding!
