balancer drive gear removal?

I have a Magellan 330 and made a mount that bolts to the left front fork. There are 2 bolts to hook to. My primary objective was to get the screen at the same level as the "dash". I learned from the Kawasaki tank bag position (I have to stop to look down at the map) that the view distance and angle is important. This had the other advantage of minimizing vibration. Since it is rigid there is no whip or amplified vibrations from a handle bar mount. The 330 is not as large as the new Magellans but I think almost any size could be mounted just to the left of the dash. Hi folks, just about to take delivery of my 2003 KLR, and I want to get a new GPS for it...in particular, a Garmin GPSMap76S. Has anybody got one of these installed, and if so, using which mount? I've looked at the RAM mounts, and one that looks like a good fit is the RAM-B-149Z-GA6, has anyone used it, and can you have the GPS on the bars without blocking the instruments? I have to thank a lister for this (but I think it was on one of the dualsport lists). my buddy just bought a gps to use on a trip that we are beginning to plan for next year. going out to explore the badlands. anyway, does anyone have pics of the way they have their gps mounted. he also needs a 12v lighter plug but is concerned bout the thing getting corroded. you guys know of a marine type lighter plug ?? thanks guys, scott

I just use a RAM mount for my GPS attached to the handlebars. Rather than using a cigarette lighter to power it, I recommend using a flat 2-pole connector, like the ones used on some heated clothing, battery tenders, etc. A cigarette lighter is still good to have on the bike for other things and you can get an all-weather one with a gasket-sealed, spring-loaded door at Wal-Mart for about $7.00. Have used a unit from Napa on boats and cycles. Has a gasketed snap spring door and sealed at the wire entrance. Bit spendy. $10-15. No photos, but I use some doubled up duct tape for a vibration dampening pad, then duct tape the sh*T out of it, sticking it down to the gas cap. On a KLR you only need to peel it off once a day, if that. Plus it's VERY protected in that position. Devon vintageracer8882@... wrote:

Can anyone please help. Unfortunately had a total failure of the Doorhickey, causing the chain to jump sending the balancer syncronisation out and round off several teeth on the drive gear. This gear is available from dealer as one piece (it includes timing chain gear), but has anyone manange to get this gear off the crankshaft with the shaft still in the bike. I believe the gear is shrunk/sweated on.
