klr650 vs. suzuki dr650: vibrations, reliability, maint?

Post by tee6111 » Thu Sep 16, 2004 6:24 pm

Greetings from new member, I'm fairly new to dual-sport riding. I've had a Kaw Sherpa for several months and really like it. However I'm considering getting a KLR650/DR650 for longer trips/ touring/carrying capacity. I've ridden the KLR but not the DR650. I'm curious if anybody has had any experience with both, how do they compare in terms vibrations, reliability, and ease of maintenance. Thanks t

DR650 is nimbler and faster, has a better motor with more torque and horsepower, and is air-cooled. It's lighter and not as comfortable. Seat will make your ass hurt. It has a real front end with pinch bolts and a nice brake. After a few days on the DR650 when I get on the KLR is feels like a huge beast, but that changes in a mile or two and it becomes the great all-round bike that it is. If you want a dual-sport that a beginner can use to embarrass sportbike riders in the twisties, the DR is your machine. it's also very easy to ride due to its light weight. But you can't really go wrong with a KLR, unless you're one of those guys who thinks he has an infallible doohickey. Then it may bite you. Check your doohickey once in a while.

And the naysayers are out there lamenting about the poor economy....pshaw. Are you better off than you were four years ago, Bill, damn straight. A new home in the hills, a guzzi and a KTM, yowza, livin large. Those aluminum rear stays on the 950 are sweeeeet indeed. Gloat on dude. --Jim A-15
