2004 vs. 2005 klr 650

Post by Andrew Demma » Fri Aug 06, 2004 7:28 am

Hi Folks, After years of waiting (lived in a condo complex that banned bikes), I'm about to buy a KLR 650. With some dealers still having 2004's left on their lots, I was wondering what the difference between the two years was. Any changes for 2005? I did some Google searches and looked at the FAQ to no avail. Thanks, Andy

Possibly color, but nothing mechanical since 1993 (or was it 98). Same bike (mostly), 1987 parts interchange with 2005's, 'ceptin color. You'll not be disapointed. We're your one stop KLR information shop! millerized (list asshole since 2001!) (or at least one of many that HASN'T been banned yet) --- In DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com, "Andrew Demma" wrote:

Yep, the 05's are still mostly red with a black tank, but there's more black showing on the tank because they changed the "KLR" logo again. It now goes from the tank and onto the shroud. (so if you lose a shroud cover or buy a new one without replacing the sticker, you will be riding a "K" bike, or "KL" bike)

Neither, it was '96 (the first blue colored ones) but thanks for playing. (sorry, out of prizes Miller) MrMoose A8 (Barbie and Ken special)

The hand guards are red on the 05, and black on the 04, is another change. Joe A18 5800 SE Ky --- Keith Saltzer wrote:

2004 vs. 2005 klr 650

I would compare prices, a Harley/Kawasaki dealer offered mee an 04(after talking him down) for $150 more than I was priced an 05 at another dealer.I think that had something to do with black and orange. The web site shows the msrp for an 05 at $5099, an 04 at $4999, and someone on the list said he was offered an 05 for $4800. I went 50 miles passing two dealers along the way to buy my 04. 50 miles to save a couple hundred bucks seemed like a good thing to do. Plus I got to ride the bike home while the wife drove the truck. Joe A18 5800 SE Ky --- Andrew Demma wrote:

1- If they are getting stock HP and stock torque but at a much lower RPM peak then the diesel KLR would work great for what I use it for- 100mi stretches of highway and rocky Northeast woods riding. Torque is everything. Being able to ride out, ride woods, ride home, never even coming close to running out of fuel? 2- Making my own motor fuel. Step 1, fry food. Step 2, make biodiesel. Step 3, ride motorcycle I guess I could run Gasohol, but what jetting changes would I have to make to run 50% ethanol? And won't that reduce the tank range?

Yes, but that has a lot more to do with suspension and bash plating than motor mods. You can try as hard as you want but you won't make a serious dent in the power to weight ratio without going over 650cc.

AFAIK he never pumped much cash into it. He runs a machine shop/ engine tuning shop. He already had ALL the extra parts, machine tools, and know how. He probably got bored and wondered what he could do with a KLR650. So he did a few things, had fun, then went back to his regular job that makes more money than selling KLR hop-up kits. Powroll discontinued their kit due to lack of interest as I heard it. You probably won't hear from him at all. I still don't get the "we need two million dollars"..... I understand that you can't use military money to run the civilian production line. But why couldn't you build 20 civilian bikes, use them to pass the DOT and EPA testing, then build the rest in pre-ordered lots? You could sell crate diesel motors, again on a pre-order basis. Wait until you have 100 or 500 orders then do a run of crankcases. People out riding the bikes will be the best advertising. Besides, I still don't believe they can't sell crate motors. Considering that they don't make the other 80% of the bike, how much money would they make on complete bike sales anyway? Devon Devon
