front end wobble on road
Hey all,
I am sure this has been talked about already, but the search function sucks for the posts
so I am going to post this question again...
I own a KLR650 and when I am on the freeway I find that the front end starts to wobble
sometimes. I have taken the stock windshield off and that has helped a bit, however I am
thinking that the front fender (due to its size) may be contributing.
Any suggestions on getting this under control... kinda bummed how it handles on the
freeways.
Thanks,
Rod

Rod,
Check your steering head bearings. Check your forks, be sure triple
clamps are torqued. Check all the bolts at least twice, as they can
unload when adjacent bolt is torqued. Check tire pressures, run
higher than the manual says on the street. Take apart and lube
swingarm and rear suspension, assemble, and torque. Mabye add a fork
brace.
All the best,

A few things to check: - front end alignment - tire pressure - front tire balance? - relax your grip on bars Mine has stock fender and I have no problems on the highway doing 70-80+. Occasionally behind trucks the wash will cause some flutter but no big deal. jim> I own a KLR650 and when I am on the freeway I find that the front end starts to wobble > sometimes. Whenever I get in the draft of some cage my front end will pick up a wobble that ends soon as I break out of the draft. That is about the only wobble I've experienced except for when my steering head bearing loosened. OK, this is gonna sound whacky, but just go with me a minute here. Up until
a couple months ago, my only helmet was a Nolan N100E which is a great lid,
but leaves a little to be desired off road. As soon as I got my new Arai
XD, one of the first things I noticed about it was that riding around with
the visor on makes the whole bike feel more wobbly. On the highway, small
gusts from traffic and what-not tend to buffet my head around in such a way
that it actually makes it feel like the front end is moving around
sometimes. It might be that when my noggin gets tossed back and forth, it
moves my shoulders just enough to effect the front end.
My point is, I think that MX style helmets with a big visor can possibly be
a cause of minor front end wobblies. Of course, that's a far-fetched idea,
but I do know that it does affect me. The actual culprit in most cases is
probably going to be steering head bearing adjustment, tire condition and
pressure, tire balance, or maybe a wheel bearing.

I wear mx helmets with long visors and they are a must for hot sunny
summer days. I am tall and with a 10 inch over stock windshield and
tilting dn my helmet a little, I can avoid most the wind at hiway
speeds.

look at the front fender, it catches gusts big time...some people
cut it back, others put on a lower street fender

I have down that and have scars to prove it. Not a good thing at 60 mph or so dressed only in shorts and running shoes.
