new speeodmeter for '02 klr 650 for trw trip

Post by baberc2003 » Sun Jul 25, 2004 12:36 pm

Hi, I just bought a KLR and am setting it up for a Round the World trip. One of the thingw I want to do is replace the US Speedo for a metric one (Kilometers) since everyone else in the world uses km, I would rather switch over now, and get used to it before leaving in a couple of months. Does anyone know where I can get a metric speedo for a fair price, and how hard will it be to replace? Thanks

I would suggest just sticking on a bicycle computer like the Sigma Sport BC1600 that I have. You can switch them from metric to standard. The only tip is to pick a computer that allows you to dial in a wheel manually and not just by pre-set bicycle sizes. Another tip is to get the 'long' wire or 'tandem' or 'rear wheel' pickup cable. This is to save you splicing the tiny stock cable to add the few inches it needs to fit a motorcycle. It's very cheap, maybe $50 max, I forget. The other alternate is one of those slick rally computers, but they are a few hundred bucks. A GPS will read speed too incidentally.

If you just want to know how fast you are going in metric units, use the kph scale on your US speedometer. For an odometer, a Sigma bicycle speedometer (about $25, cheaper that a metric replacement) can be calibrated in kilometers. A GPS can also be set up to show speed and distance in metric units.
