unable to search full archive

Post by ulacam » Mon Jun 28, 2004 11:04 am

This may be NKLR, but anyway, why am I unable to search archives back to 2000. The messages are all still there, so it wouldn't be anything for the Yahoo "Search Archive" to find them. This is SUPER annoying. Why not have access to all that knowledge? Even questions I posted a few weeks (and the answers I'd like to review) can not be accessed! Am I missing something? Maybe Yahoo charges for this "service" ... I don't know. If so, and I may be a newbie to this Group, there must be better options out there.

Nope, Yahoo! groups blows in this respect. I was hoping to have my own fully searchable archives site up last week for the list to use, but YG has been limiting me to downloading only ~2500 messages/week from the website, and with 120,000 messages it'll take me awhile. If anybody out there is on broadband, running Linux (or NT/2000/XP with activeperl), is comfortable with commandline tools and would like to help me out, please let me know, I'd love the help. I can chunk the list and assign people to download sections of it with the perl script I have that gets individual messages from the YG website and saves them out as mbox files. The only problem with this is once your IP address has hit the bandwidth limit, you won't be able to access the YG website from that IP at all until the timeout has expired. Not a problem if you don't post using the list web interface. OR, if anybody has archives of the list saved on their machine at home, I'd love to get my hands on those files. It'd save me mucho time getting this thing running. I'm also working on importing the archives from the old xmission list (1998ish) for our reading pleasure. Hopefully I'll have all this stuff up and running in the next couple of weeks. Thanks, Z DC A5X A12X

Jim, Great photos! In late July I will be on an annual campout at Mammoth Pools Reservoir in that area. We have a group of about 20 old friends from here on the central coast who camp up there at Wagner's for about 10 days each summer. I usually take the KLR and join them for a weekend. Lots of good fire roads around there. I look forward to exploring this area a little more. Thanks, Kurt Grife [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
