I've been having trouble with countershaft sprockets wearing fast- lots
of debris gets trapped and rattles around. I've always been worried that
a rock would find its way between the sprocket and chain, or between the
chain and case. I clean the sprocket after every offroad ride, but
there's still a lot of time spent with crap stuck in there.
I cut away the outsideof the cover, and riveted a piece of 1/8" aluminum
sheet over the stator wires. This won't keep the chain from derailing
(like a proper "case saver" would) but should leave me with functioning
ignition and charging if the chain comes off the front sprocket.
The next thing is to rivet another piece at the top of the cover, to
prevent debris from riding the chain into the case.

float stuck in carb??
I had an injury and couldn't ride my bike for about 3 months and I
made the mistake of just unhooking the battery and letting it sit.
When I hooked everything back up and went to start her up, it took
quite a few attempts... acted like it was flooded. White smoke coming
out of the pipe... whole nine.
Once I got it started, gas started coming out of what looks like an
overflow hose off the carb. Looking around, it seems like I may have a
stuck float in the carb.
My questions are:
1) Does this diagnosis sound correct to you all? If not, what do you
think it is?
2) If it is the float, what is my best course of action to get the
bike back in running condition? Can I find a resource on the web, with
detailed instructions?
Thanks a ton!

float stuck in carb??

1- the right way, remove, disassemble, and thoroughly clean the carburetor. 2- the shortcut, worth a try. Drain all the old stale fuel from the tank and carb bowl. Squirt/pour marvel mystery oil down the fuel line into the bowl until it's full. Tap on the bowl a bunch of times with a rubber mallet. Leave it overnight, then in the morning drain out the MMO, put a gallon of FRESH gas in the tank and see what happens.
