klr650c5 engine r.i.p !

Post by pupson67 » Mon May 10, 2004 2:36 pm

I have some news on the KLR650C5 engine problem I think will interest you. The crankcases have been separated at a single cylinder racing specialist, who have discovered that the left main crankshaft bearing has broken. There doesn't seem to be any cause to the failure, such as oil starvation. Here's the bad news if you own a later than 1996 model, Kawasaki do not or will not supply just a left hand crank bearing. They sell it as part of an assembly, which includes the whole left half of the crankshaft. I have been quoted 345 for these spares, so I'm in desperate need of a ball bearing manufacturer who can supply me a suitable replacement bearing. Does anyone know the dimensions, part number or specifications of the main crankshaft bearing ? I am calling the dealer tomorrow to request the same information, so I can start my long search into a replacement bearing. I may write to Kawasaki and tell them, what a crap idea not selling just a bearing actually is !!!

If I remember correctly, the ball bearings on most Japanese bikes will have a number engraved into the ball/roller cage that corresponds with the size, ID/OD, of the bearing. It's usually the same on seals; there's a metal band that has the seal number on it as well. As that my KLR is not taken apart right now, I can't verify this info, BUT on one of my son's KX80, the crank bearings and tranny bearings were all identified in this manner. Good luck. from the enlightened KLR of Harry Seifert bseifert71@...
