Hi, I have a KLR650C5 in the UK and have experienced an apparent engine seizure. The bike started to make a low, but loud rumbling noise from the lower end of the engine, as I turned the engine off it seemed to stop dead. I have stripped the motor down and found some small black rubber pieces in the crankcase oil screen, apart from these nothing else. Since then, I have removed the oil pump which has some small scratches, but nothing ugly, and there is nothing obviously worn or broken. The barrel is also off and there is no damage to the piston or barrel. I have blow oil down the centre of the crankshaft and can see it come out between the shaft weights and connecting rod. The engine in this state turns over very freely using a ratchet handle, with no binding or abnormal noises. I have made sure that the oil passages are clear in the RH case and the crankshaft oil seal is in good condition, the relief valve was slightly open, but cleaning cured the problem. There is no debris in the LH case, the cam chain tensioner adjusting bolt spring is also attached and not broken and the guides look ok. Would I gain anything if I was to split the crankcases (something I don't really want to do or have the pullers) ? One more question, how does the crankcase breather work on the KLR, should the air be coming out of the crankcase or going in? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Neil

Could the engine be turned over freely by hand before you began the tear down? How many mile on the engine? Any damage to the top of the piston as might occur if it jumped timing? Do the anti vibration eccentrics turn freely?

anybody abandoned their front side covers?

I got tired of putting my covers back on so I've been riding without them for quite some time. Haven't noticed any negative side effects! Quoting rsanders30117 :
