Did the doohickey mod recently. The bike runs fine, but I've got a nagging feeling that I may have installed the new doohickey backward (flat side in). If I did, and I'm not sure, what kinds of problems would that create? Thanks in advance. JT Wilson

If you had put it in backwards, I don't think it's possible to get the spring to reach the doohickey (don't ask how I know - I was sure Mike and Fred had sent me the wrong part). If the spring reached ok w/ good tension, I'd say you're good to go. Something would break. A good portion of the lever would be hanging out in the air. Tighten the screw down and bend or break the doohickey. I have a 95 motor in the kitchen with the outer and inner covers off. It looks like you could install it backwards but I think your starter gear would hit it. pretty sure the spring does not hook to the doohickey but another lever on the idler shaft. If you are really concerned I'd look again. That balancer mechanism flying apart while riding would not be good. Can you say deadly ? Locked motor etc. Just take your cover and look.

You're absolutely right that the spring attaches to another lever and not the doohickey - good catch!. My memory is that "things just didn't work" w/ the doohickey in backwards, and my mind lept to the spring. It wasn't the spring. It was the locking bolt. W/ the doohickey in backwards, I'm pretty sure the locking bolt does not go through the slot in the doohickey. I still think if he got it buttoned up ok, it's ok. When I had it turned backwards, it was real clear that it wouldn't work.
