Progressive is going to charge me 86.00 more a year for insurance on
the KLR than I was paying on the Sportster. Is anyone cheaper than
Progressive?

Try GMAC Insurance with the Rider Magazine plan. By far the cheapest I've found. Kurt Grife [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]> Progressive is going to charge me 86.00 more a year for insurance on > the KLR than I was paying on the Sportster. Is anyone cheaper than > Progressive?

Warning rant mode to follow.... Not to disagree with the advice you have gotten but I'm a little biased against GMAC, I admit it. Be careful of them quoting you one on the phone one price and then when you get the bill it mysteriously went up 100% with no explanation. I once got a deal from them that was too good to be true, then when I got the policy it was 100% more, and I have zero points and zero accidents. I think what happened was the phone rep quoted me for 6 months, I asked are you for real, is this a 1 yr. quote and she said , yep 1 year. So I paid in full. Then I got a bill 3 months later, said I owed another installment. Another time they cancelled me, after 1 month, said I wasn't qualified. I told them to go F**K themselves. I go through a local insurance agent now. They act like they are separate from the big guys, but as far as I'm concerned they are just an arm of GMAC financing, and probably insolvent through off the book financial deriatives. And check this out, some guy allegedly got screwed by GMAC.. http://listproc.ucdavis.edu/archives/cbx/log0203/0348.html To add something positive to the discussion, there is a columnist from citybike magazine , which is highly regarded IMO for knowing insurance. His name is Michael Felder, and his website is http://www.7cycles.com/ Check it out for the straight dope, maybe he offers GMAC , but I doubt it. Conall-> found. > Kurt Grife

Conall, I recall your telling me about your bad experience but my experience
is better. I've used GMAC for my bikes and cars for about 6 years now with no
problems like you describe. The quotes have been accurate and no billing
problem. They sell me annual bike poIicies but the auto policy is only for 6
months. Have not had a claim so can't comment on that aspect.

From every study of motorcycle insurance costs that I've read, no one has been able to identify a single company offering the best deal. All that I have read says you have to shop around, locally, to find what you'll consider the best deal. I expect I'll be switching from Progressive this year. Just got my annual bill and despite being ticket and accident free for another year Progressive has decided to hit me with 100% increase in my bill. I have been with Progressive for about 5 years - roughly the same premium every year. This year, they raised me about 50% - no tickets, no claims. I started looking around and found out Progressive still beat the competition by a significant margin. Full coverage and high limits for '95 VFR 750 + '89 CBR 600 Hurricane + 02 KLR 650 = $553.00. (Some insurers call the 2 Hondas "high performance" bikes and refuse to insure them or charge $2 to $3 K = same thing. Hans in Minneapolis> > >I expect I'll be switching from Progressive this year. This year, for a single KLR Progressive wants $340 from me. If the competition has jacked up their rates as well I stick it out with Progressive, Pat G'ville, Nv [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]> > I have been with Progressive for about 5 years - roughly the same premium > every year. Well, be glad you don't live in NJ, the best deal for a full coverage
policy with increased liability was nearly $800. That's married, over
35, clean record, blah blah.

Take a look at Rider Insurance (http://www.njrider.com). They insured
me while I was in NJ. Liability on my KLR was around $130, full
coverage I believe around $450. Single, late 20s, clean record. Can't
speak as to how they respond to claims, since I didn't have any.
