Ugh! I am sooooo sick of hearing about the KTM Adventure! The thing weighs as much as a TL1000s and makes almost as much power. It costs over ELEVEN THOUSAND DOLLARS!!!!! Guys, that's NOT a good thing. How in the world are you going to put down 100+ RWHP in a sand wash or mud hole? I'm sure that some of you out there have the experience and tallent to do a great job on it, I know that professional off road racers who hjave nothing else to do in life can race them in the desert, and I don't know squat about the desert, but I'm thinking that the race must be prety much on desert roads or hard dirt, not sand bars. Besides, they don't have to pay the ELEVEN THOUSAND DOLLARS to get the bike in the first place. I was just starting to think the 640 Adventure was kinda cool, but now it's gone. I know that there are a ton of guys that swear by thier OPBs and BMWs, but this is a KLR list. With a couple hundred dollars worth of shock and fork work and a can or orange Krylon Fusion I can have just as nice a bike as a KTM, but one that's reliable and easy to maintaine and still have enough money left over for hookes and bear and a Paris Hilton lap dance. VIVE LE KLR!!!!!!!!!!! anon.

Well, I'm not fond of KTM myself, but the 950 does post some nice numbers and reviews have been good. However, there are some real world issues with the machine such as high routine maintenance cost and some out of sight replacement costs for plastic. A friend of mine is going to buy one and checked into buying some replacement body panels. Plastic for one side of the bike is $1800+ ! I sell a brand new 200cc dual sport that cost not that much more! If you have the money, go for it and enjoy. I'll stick to the el cheapo stuff myself. Gino Rider Valley Motorcycles

Ride the 950 in the dirt?...Geez, you think I'd subject a bike that expensive and cool looking to getting scratched and dirty? Heck man, the 950 would be my pavement pimpmobile...my stylin' Paris-to- Dakar poseur rig...my avant-garde adventure sled. Then I'd drag out my KLR, ride it in the rocks, ride it in the dirt, drop it, dent it, scratch it, fix it, ride it again off road, break it, fix it again, and keep doing this over and over again. But when I got back home, I'd ride my 950 down main street in my clean, new, stylish riding duds...looking good. And then like the other guy in the earlier 950 post, I'd wake up. BTW, your comment about a 950 in the sand may be a little off. Have you not seen how many of these PtD bikes perform in the sand? Granted it doesn't often look easy, but they do it, and they usually do it big. Sand bars?...man, they have sand dunes the size of the USS Nimitz. My favorite shot of past PtDs is the one of Gaston Rahier launching off of the face of a giant sand dune on a BMW and then augering into the face of an adjacent dune. He would have cleared a section of freeway with that leap in the regular world. Sand?...most of these bikes (and the crazed riders on them) are quite capable of riding in sand. A reminder since you reminded me of one of my favorite races to watch. Coverage starts Jan 3rd, I believe nightly at 9pm, and I think the network is Speed TV. Finally, last year they did it nightly at 3am. There was a history of PtD on the other night too, amazing. I'd love to do it in one of the big diesel trucks.

Maybe it's the booze, but the KTM950 is extremely cool. I like KTM, especially how they'll slap lights and a horn on a racebike and sell it for street use. It takes Cojones that the big Four don't really have. I like that their bikes are lighter, faster, and have better suspension than most everything else. I don't like the race-bike service intervals, and that's where the KLR really starts to shine. But assuming I could afford one, and assuming I could get parts as easily as the KLR, there's nothing wrong with the KTM950 that a trip through the woods and a can of grey primer couldn't fix. A shame most people who own one will actually polish the f*&king thing. It's plastic. You don't need to clean it or polish it, that's why they used plastic. -- Devon Brooklyn, NY A15-Z '01 KLR650 '81 SR500 cafe racer "The truth's not too popular these days....." pro tapers ??

Post by Harry Seifert » Mon Dec 29, 2003 7:46 pm

Hi Scott, I've had pro tapers on my stock KLR front end for about a year. Easy change out with pro taper adapter kit, no change to cables or brake hose. Actuallt front brake hose flops around a little more 'cause there's no where to tie it in the middle of the bars. Really cut down on the handle bar vibration too. Buddy

Been reading a lot of Harleyesque "My brand is better than yours" stuff on the list regarding KTM. Learning from other's opinions and experience makes life interesting. However, I wonder how many of you trashing KTM have ridden KTM. I see many of you list the bike(s) you own or have owned at the bottom of your posts. Some even list the accessories they've installed on their mounts. For the record I can't remember all the bikes I've owned, much less what I bolted onto them. I can, however remember a few I didn't enjoy owning (Harley among them). When I say I don't like Harley it's because I owned one and enjoyed the day I unloaded it on someone else more than the day I bought it. It just ain't my thing. I've owned two KLR's, and still ride one of them (because I like the KLR). It's my daily commuter, and dirt road burner. I still have two KTM's in the stable and anyone who thinks $2k can make a KLR compare to a KTM just hasn't been on a late model KTM. The KLR is a great all purpose cheap ride. If you want to make it compare to a premium works quality bike like a KTM your best bet is to: 1. Jack up the KLR gas cap 2. Drive a different (much more expensive) bike under it 3. Lower the gas cap. I rode the LC4 just recently and seriously considered buying it. I opted for an 02 EXE 520 the dealer needed to get off the floor instead. The price was right, and I couldn't walk from it. It's now broken in and will shortly be dual sported. Wifey said I can get another bike after the first of the year and I'm looking at the Adventure real hard. Yeah, because I can... Moral to the story: Any guy who can afford a trophy bitch will ride one... That doesn't mean riding fat ugly ones is no fun anymore. I'll go back to lurk mode now and attempt to filter out the luggage, radiator guard, paint scheme, stainless steel bolt, and assorted KLR bling bling threads. My small suggestion to all in the new year is, "Try to ride more than you write." The list will be more compact, and you'll have something interesting that you've actually experienced to write about. Happy New Year... -Scott
