My stocker was sharp as needles at 10k. I tossed my Sunstar replacement (from Sprocket Specialists) at about the same. It might have had another 1000 mi. in it before it got as bad as the original. Now I have a JT on there, which still looks good after 4.5k.

I got a Sprocket Specialist aluminum sprocket, ultra drilled, and titan tough coated, in a stock 43 size. I've had it on there for the last 14,200 miles, and it looks only slightly worn. It will do another 14,000 easy. I find this amazing because I do everything that INCREASES sprocket wear. I have had four different chains on it, and changed the front sprocket twice too. I never ride calmly. I have done hundreds of wheelies, hundreds of power slides, and thousands of shifts at redline. I have even ridden for about 500 miles off road with it. I could kick myself for tossing out my OE sprocket which had no visible wear. I followed the "change everything at once" religion and wasted a sprocket. I think Kawi used the same material for my ZR-7's sprocket. It has 29k miles and no visible wear (2nd chain). I plan to flip it over when the next chain is due. I think this one sprocket will outlast the motorcycle. The steel Sprocket Specialists part wore very rapidly. In fact, it was visibly trashed long before the chain reached the wear limit. I think they used zinc-plated doohickey steel, which is nothing more than hardened recycled stock shift levers. RM

Its easy to find folks that don't have much good to say about Sprocket Specialist products. My local dealer keeps a catalog 'cause every so often a customer comes in with a bike that only SS has sprockets for and then he has a few customers that believe the cheapest price always makes the for the best replacement part - they never are bothered by poor quality as long as its cheap. About the only use I have for SS sprockets is when I want to serious about playing with my gearing. Being cheap I can get a selection to play with and by the time I've got things sorted out they are ready to be replaced with a quality set. I almost bet you oil with 90wt gear oil. Do ya ? I switched per list wisdom or someones on the list and notice the same. 12-14000 miles with prob. that much to go. Same for the chain. Switching front sprockets etc.

Avon Gripster on the front for the trip to Alaska. The only time I found the Dunlop 491 to be challenging was on the dirt road north of Crowsnest BC. The road was nice and wet, no dust. Been off the list a few days, had to go to Minneapolis to do the Christmas thing, therefore the delay in response. BTW, I did get 20,000 miles out of one 491 that was almost all pavement. Allan A14
