locked motor (part 2)
I removed the left side cover to the motor. The cam and balancer
chain are both broken. The Eagle doohickey still looks good. I didn't
remove the stator so I can't take any pictures. It doesn't look good

FUCK! That sucks bigtime. I'd be interested to see the cause of the failure, pull you valve cover and see if the KACR is still intact. Had a friend of mine install megacycle cams, NO KACR on cam
So when he went back stock he sawed the KACR off,
I also sawed my KACR off last year,

Details ... We want the procedure. How fugly was it? Pictures? Special tools, techniques, or prayers? I've picked up some motor parts and the KACR failure seems to be a key source for blowing the engine. Usually taking the chains, cams, and cam journals, sometimes the rotor/flywheel. One engine had the valve cover shattered by flailing KACR pieces. I know other riders have racked up 80k miles without an issue. But reducing even a small percentage risk would be good. I aint always within walking distance of the pickup. Thanks! MarkB Bottom posted for your protection...> So when he went back stock he sawed the KACR off, > I also sawed my KACR off last year, > Mike

Any problems starting without the KACR? Been thinking of removing mine, but
don't want to do anything detrimental to a good machine, seems this would be
one of those irreversible mods....
Thanks for any input.

Could not tell any difference at all after removing the KACR from my KLR at
79,000 miles. I used the Dremel cut off wheel. Removed the cam from the
motor to keep grinding material out.

Actually, this is one of the cases where general info for the KLR doesn't exactly apply to the KLX. From what I've read on the Thumpertalk.com site, the KACR is a known POS on the smaller KLX bikes. Might be on the KLX650 also. Apparently as recently as last years' KLX300 the KACR is indexed wrong on the cam and it doesn't work. I think it has been 2 years now, that one of the guys I ride with had his KACR fall apart, and blow a hole in his valve cover on his KLX 650. I think it is a 94? Anyway, he fixed the hole, cut off the rest of the KACR, did a complete valve job on the head, and it now has 44,000 miles on it. He uses Avon Gripsters, and only rides on road. No, no compression check. My KLR runs great, think it has just as much power
as new. Oil consumption is a little more than a pint in 4,000 miles.
I amputated the KACR while searching for the top end noise. Later, I was
told by a real motorcycle mechanic that the noise is piston slap, clutch
basket wear, and bearing skate. He said the journal bearing is loose enough
to slide (skate) rather than roll. It's been making this noise for about
7,000 miles now and getting worse. Haven't been riding it much since going
to California in September. Concerned about getting very far from the house
with it now, so much so that I rode a different bike to Texas last week.
