countershaft sprocket??

Post by Bill Jennings » Mon Oct 27, 2003 7:49 pm

Ordered a JT Steel CT sprocket. It is not as wide as the stock. In fact it lacks .125 thousands in width. Is this OK, or should I go back to stock. Oh, the bike is a 1993. Also is there a dealership in the Dallas area that will have parts?? I live just north and the local dealer here doesn't have much?? Bill Jennings 877-563-6716

NO. Kawasaki dealers do NOT carry KLR parts. Oh sure, they have light bulbs, oil filters, spark plugs, and tires, but NOTHING exclusively for a KLR. Everything must be ordered. In May, I stopped at 7 or 8 Kawasaki dealers between Dallas and DC looking for a front sprocket. I finally got one by riding up to Pennsylvania to a friend's house and bought one from him. In July, while riding to Vintage Motorcycle Days in Ohio, the carb diaphragm went bad. Of course it had to be ordered. On the way home, my back brake pads were completely gone, or at least one side was. Stopped at several Kawasaki dealers, and of course, no brake pads. Finally got pads from the Suzuki dealer in El Dorado Springs, MO. The parts person was glad to look it up. Every time I ask why they don't carry KLR parts, they would tell me that Kawasaki doesn't sell very many KLRs, or say that the KLR is not a popular bike. BTW, I've had good luck with the Sunstar sprockets, like what Fred sells. http://www.angelfire.com/ut/moab/index.html Allan A14

Hey, when you're checking your oil level, you ARE doing so with the bike vertical right?

Chris, Yup, bikes vertical when I check it. The previous owner just let it get low I guess. I wish I'd measured how much came out the first oil change but I didn't really think about it then. Even with it low I'm thinking it was still in the serviceable range. According to my owner's manual which arrived today, as long as it's above the lower mark it's ok for the bottom end. Next oil change I'm gonna put in 2.0 liters and run the engine to fill the filter. Then I'm gonna see where the oil is in the sight glass. After I have a reference I'll add the last 0.5 liters so I have the correct amount of oil. Thanks for checking on this. You know you could have gotten the carb diaphragm at a Harley dealer, right? Thor

Yea, but while on the road, I didn't have the part number. If it had happened at home, it would have been easy. Allan
