I turn 50 this April and I want to buy a KLR 650 fer my birthday. I
deserve it. I have busted my ass going back to school as a 40
something to become an elementary school teacher so I could have
summers off. I don't have a wife (anymore) or want one that would
tell me no. I want to take a trip somewhere fun like The Grand
Canyon or Alaska or the tip or Argentina. So where are ya goin?

Tom, You're going to beat me to 50 by a month. I've got several ideas for rides next year. I'm thinking of grabbing a week around Easter and go enjoy springtime in Death Valley. Come July I want to point the bike north and make for the Columbia River and catch the Washougal MX. Then, come Monday point the bike east and follow the Columbia and try to find a route to Ouray, Colorado that takes in Bear Tooth Pass and Cody, Wyoming. From Ouray I would like to more or less follow the route Butch Cassidy used to escape back into Robbers Roost, Utah, after robbing the bank in Telluride. From there, head for Bryce and Zion and back across Nevada. Of course, in the spirit of true advanture, plans could change on the fly. I'm a newbee that bought an '01 KLR650 a few weeks ago from a
dealer. The only issue I have had so far is getting used to the
clutch action when moving off in first from a start position. It
seems like I really have be conscious to let the bike roll a few
feet while keeping the clutch in the friction zone so that it won't
stall out. When I rode on the MSF 250 trainer I could let the clutch
out much faster and be fully engaged in first quickly as long as I
was giving it ample throttle.
I've practiced on my bike and have gotten the hang of it pretty good
now but every once in a while will let the clutch out too fast and
stall, which makes you look foolish.
I've tried opening the
throttle more/less, etc but it always comes back to how I use the
clutch. Other than this, I am loving it and can't get riding off my
mind!
Is this just that I am new and will come with more practice, an
ideosyncrasy of the KLR, an issue with my bike,...? Any
tips/suggestions?
Paul
