thanks regarding my "clutch" problem
I'd like to thank everyone who provided so many ideas for me. I have
the problem sorted, and would like to provide an update. The short
version: I'm STUPID. Actually, I'm just a very poor diagnostician.
I did a GREAT job with the clutch rebuild, and now the cable is lubed
and adjusted and working great. The longer version: The problem
wasn't the clutch. It sure felt that way to me because the engine
would rev while in neutral and with the clutch in, but I could
never "hook up" in normal riding. I finally broke down and went to a
mechanic. He found a problem with the diaphragm in the carb....it
was very noticeable under load (which is why I really noticed the
problem when I went to a 16T sprocket). It also caused a drag, or
the feeling of a slipping clutch, and somehow some of the symptoms.
I have the assembly on order, and he-the qualified mechanic-will do
the work. I think the toughest part of the deal for him was how to
not make me look stupid. I give him an "A" for effort, but he failed
because THAT test was not passable.
