wrong sprocket ?

Volker, I ordered and received the same exact set up from SS and it installed just fine. Just slip the sprocket on and carefully use a pair of pliers to slide the retainer clip on to the shaft. It takes a bit of an effort to slip the retainer on and you'll have to 'open' the pliers to get a wide grip, but because of this you know it's not going anywhere. Be careful not so score or mess up the grooves on the shaft when tightening the retainer down..If you don't like this way you may be able to lightly tap the retainer into place (after it flies across the garage floor a few times) using a screwdriver or a more appropriate driver. I remember there may have been a washer on one side of the CS sprocket so make sure you replace that on the same place as before. I've had mine on my '250 for about 8 months with no problemos...HTH From: "Volker Traudt" Date: Thu Oct 2, 2003 10:50 am Subject: Wrong Sprocket? I finally received my front sprockets from SprocketSpecialists (they had forgotten them in last shipment). Now it looks like they will not fit my 1987 KLR250. My sprocket is mounted/secured with a "washer/plate" with 2 bolts. The sprockets they send has no screw holes, instead a plain washer and a retainer clip. Backside says they'll fit 85-01 KLR250. Am I missing something here? This turns out to be an ordeal! Is the retainer SS sends you anything like a large e-clip? Perhaps the 250 doesn't have enough power to wear the countershaft splines, but if the sprocket isn't held tightly on the 650s CS you'll wear the splines off. Hence the reason why I recommend Jake's retainer kit to anyone with a pre-96 650, as the OEM retainer doesn't work so well. Z DC A5X A12X

Pretty much is like an E-clip. And the only thing holding the sprocket are the splines. I don't notice any wear, but then again I haven't looked. There's no play when it's slid in and I can't say if it'd cause any problems, although the setup looked pretty solid to me...

My 89 650 has the e-clip on the countershaft sprocket. Bill M (I sat on a silver 950 Adventure today, while I was supposed to be working. It is an impressive motorcycle, with an impressive price)

The package includes a washer as you say. Will put it on, just had my doubts since it looked so much different from the original, and knowing (from Jake's modification parts) that there are different disigns out there on the 250 and 650. Sprocket Specialist wrote back, they told me they have used that E clip design since years without problems. So I am going to put them on and see how it works. (Never got an answer out of them while on the phone, being passed on 4 times with holding periods inbetween "are you being helped" over and over again; finally gave up and emailed; then they responded). I would see if Jake's retainer kit will fit on the 250's splines, many high mileage early model 650's have failed/worn CS splines. Even my A5 with only 14k on the clock had fairly significant wear. Z DC A5X A12X
