need more power!!!!!!!!!!!!

Post by Scott Wass » Tue Aug 26, 2003 9:44 pm

I was out riding with a couple of buddies they had a XRL650 and a NX 650 they would both eat the KLR in a drag race and roll ons frome 55mph. What can a guy do for little or nothing to even things out?. Does anyone know how the KLR compares to the XRL as far as gearing the Honda would loft the front tire over mud puddles and rocks and the KLR would just plow through them.

Put on a 14 tooth front sprocket. It's low-cost and easy. Allan A14

Honestly do not think the KLR will put out as much as a Honda, but you could also take the rear sprocket up a couple teeth to give you a little more bite. I would say do not attempt to race them. The NX did'nt loft the front easy I bet, the XR is lighter with more power it should easily loft at lower speeds, as will the KLR with effort from the engine and rider. Maybe next time go riding with less fuel in the fuel tank to reduce some of that extra weight. Other than that, let the Honda zip through the puddles first, that way you can see if its just surface water or a hole filled up, much rather have somebody break there machine, than me break mine. ;-) Dooden A15 Green Ape

Buy an MZ [g]. The Yamaha 660 engine will easily devour the Honda. Gino www.rvmc.com

Sorry for the dummy question but what would the effect be of changing the front cog to a 14? How would the bike feel? I guess it would loose a little top speed? Anyone guess the numbers? The bike will be noticably buzzier on the highway. It will have more low speed grunt though. Less clutch slipping in really slow first gear stiff. Probably better wheelies. On the highway it will be roughly like not shifting to 5th gear.

The bike would feel much lighter without that 15th tooth. Hahhh... Actually, the big tradeoff is top-end speed versus acceleration. The bike is more trail worthy 'cause you can keep it in the powerband without having to go 25 miles an hour. The lowered gear ratio makes it easier to loft the front wheel, and acceleration is faster. Most riders report a 400RPM difference in travelling at 70mph. So the engine ir revved up more to get to that speed. The 14 tooth countershaft sprocket makes for a snappier trail bike, and is better for chasing down the sport bikes (up to a point). A 15 or even 16 tooth is better for long distance cruising as it drops the revs down, reducing the vibration somewhat. MarkB A3, A9
