it's making a funny tinking noise

Post by mugga112001 » Mon Jun 30, 2003 1:18 pm

I thought I'd turn to the list's collective mind for help. I have a 1996 with a little over 12,000 miles on it and my bike is making a funny noise. It happens when it's hot, you know after riding a bit. The noise sounds like when you have a fan turned on and you stick a small thin metal into the blades, tink, tink tink. (Oh god, do I sound like a girl trying to explain to her mechanic the noise my car is making or what) At first I thought that was the problem, some wire had come loose while riding and was hiting against my fan blade while it was turning but after taking the tank off and checking everything out it there wasn't anything there. Nothing was loose, wiggled or looked like it had been chewed off. Then I though oh god, I've run it out of oil. I check my oil level before every ride and check it again and the site was full. My husband thought that it might be stickie valves, but I'm not sure. I had the bike serviced a month ago at 9600 miles and they said everything was fine. But we have been on some longer rides this past month. I am going to take it to the shop but I thought I'd check with you all before I take it in. Thanks!

It sounds like you are describing "pinging", AKA detonation. This happens when you have a very hot motor, bad gas, weak mixture, heavy loads and wide throttle openings, hot spots in the combustion chamber, or any combination of the above. Does it usually happen when you are accelerating, or going uphill? yes, it sure does. I always put the highest octane gas when filling up. Other than using the best gas, what else is there to do?

Assuming it is knock and not chain noise, make sure you have the correct spark plug in the engine. If it is the correct one, try a colder plug. It could also be a lean condition. Is the carb stock? How's the engine temperature? Mark At 6:46 PM +0000 6/30/03, mugga112001 wrote:

You don't specifically say, but I assume the bike is running when it makes this noise? (I assume you'd know that cooling engines "tick.") Without specificity as to where the sound is coming from, it's hard to say for sure what the story might be. Here are a couple thoughts: It would be a miracle if the dealer actually DID the valve adjustment, but it almost seems possible. One of the list poets once said, "A tappy valve is a happy valve." So perhaps that is the sound you're hearing. The balancer system chain may need adjusting - http://klr6500.tripod.com/balancer.htm You may be hearing some chain noise from there. The very cheap Stop & Shop gas that I used a couple times, instead of my normal Sunoco 94, caused the bike to ping. I even got their premium, but it just isn't good gas, I guess. I'm not sure if pinging is exactly the sound you've described, but it's quite noticeable. If you haven't been using a brand name high octane gas, then I'd let what you have run out - or drain it out into a can if you want to (hopefully) solve this quicker - and refill the tank. actually, when thinking about it, I can hear it when at a stopsign in neutral while reving up the engine also. I can hear it when tooling down the road at about 35, when cruising down at 75 and while at the stopsign in neutral too. Odd.

Thanks, Mark! Stock carb and engine temp is fine. The line is usually well below the middle mark except for last friday when I was riding in 104 degree weather, then it was just a little above the middle mark. At that point, my body temperature level was well above the middle mark so we pulled over for about an house to cool down! I'll definately check the spark plug. --- In DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com, Tengai Mark Van Horn wrote:

The more info you give, the less it sounds like pinging, and the more it sounds like a fan blade ticking, ticky valve, or something like that. Does the noise vary with engine speed? Do you hear it only when running, or can you hear it while cranking the starter? Does it matter if the fan is running? --- In DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com, "mugga112001" wrote:

It happens only when the engine is running and only after it warms up. I have a feeling that it's a valve problem more than anything. How often are you supposed to adjust the valves, every 10,000 miles? If so, i just had one at 8,000. Tomorrow the shop is open so i'll talk to them and see. Also, tonight I'll take the stethoscope out and see if I can pinpoint where the noise is coming from. I can hear it when I'm in neutral so hopefully that will give me some clues. --- In DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com, "Judson D. Jones" wrote:
