gps mounting systems
I've looked back through the archives and basically there's two types of
mounts than KLR'ers are using - the Ram mount and the Touratech mount. A
few people indicated that they were using the Ram mount which is much
cheaper than the Touratech. However, the Rams don't look like they'd
provide any vibration isolation whatsoever, plus their ads don't mention it.
Is anyone using the Ram mount on the KLR successfully? In other words, did
your GPS vibrate to pieces using the Ram system?
Thanks for the help,

Correction to statement below.

They do mention it, but they don't seem to stress the idea like Touratech
does.

I use both Ram mount with my GPS V and the Touratech mount for my SP III and they both work well and I never had any vibration from them.

The hard rubber balls on the RAM mounts provide excellent vibration control.
They work very well, and the adjustability is very nice. The Touratech mounts
are good when you want to keep the GPS low. I've used the RAM mount for my emap
on my KLR and it works great.

Because of the articulation of the arm, it soaks up vibration quite

I've been using a RAM mount with a Garmin Extex Legend on my KLR over
some pretty rough terrain (like part of the Barstow-to-Vegas course)
with absolutely not problems whatsoever. Ditto with another RAM
mount with a Street Pilot on my K1100LT, which withstood the 1999
Iron Butt Rally and about 75,000 miles since.
Works well. Lasts long. And if you want, you can combine the
Touratech mount with the RAM mount.

Actually, if you look at the RAM Web site, you'll find that they're rated for use in F-16's and can take more G load than you can.> your GPS vibrate to pieces using the Ram system?

P.S. If you get a Touratech mount DO NOT get the one with the lock, it will drive you crazy with the buzz you get from it..

I was using the bicycle mount for my GPS but received sound advice that
I should probably switch to something more stable. I figured I could
peruse Home Depot and find something to make a suitable solution.
My final prototype utilized 1 plastic electrical box, cut down to just
over the wire eyelets. In that I glued a piece of foam pipe insulation
for 3/4 inch pipe. With the foam, the unit was flush with the cut. I
used good ol duct tape on the edges to hold help hold down the foam and
to round the edges a bit. The GPS is held in primarily by the foam as
it is a perfect, snug fit. I put a strip of velcro in the center of
the holder, on top of the foam, and the back of the GPS to help hold
the unit in as a safety measure. I also put a zip tie around the whole
thing for added security. Finally I mounted two clamps the the holder,
which was redundant but I didn't want to loose the GPS to vibration.
All of that clamped on to the crossbar of the handlebars. I use the
Garmin Etrex Vista, which was not really designed for this application,
which is why I had to get creative. Pics are available if you e-mail
me off line.

Yeah, does seem to be vacuum or fuel related. Additional thins to check; float level, float valve for cleanliness/operation, fuel filter, petcock for flow, dirty air filter. Let us know how it goes...
