Hi,
I am new to the list and also pretty new to KLRs, I bought mine (02 model) last year and have actually only put 2000 miles on it so far, mostly just back and forth to work. I know that isn't very many miles but I am in the military and spent the first five months of this year in the sandbox.
I haven't had any problems with the bike so far but reading the list for the past week I see a lot of talk about replacing the Doohickey, is this something I need to do? I am not really sure what a Doohickey is let alone knowing how to replace it. I would appreciate any help/knowledge on this matter and if I do need to replace it does anyone know of someone in the Omaha area that might be of help.
I did a little research on looking for a repair manual for the KLR and the best I got was that there would be one published later this year, I think it was Clymer. Does anyone know where I can get a manual?
I haven't done any mods to the bike yet, I was thinking about putting a new exhaust and jet kit on it but decided that my money would be better spent for a new Shoei helmet. It made the wife happy to know my noggin would be better protected and also that the bike wouldn't be louder. Speaking of the louder part, how much louder does the bike become with some of the aftermarket pipes? The Big Gun quiet series was the one I was really looking at but of course I am open to suggestions and of course answers to the big question, Is it really worth it to change the exhaust?
Well anyway, this is the first list I have joined so if my email is too long let me know. I will keep reading and saving the pennies to start adding things to the bike.
Thanks,
Holmy

Devon and Mark have really laid it all out into a simple format to
follow. Hats off to these guys for sharing all this info.
Aside from a bolt and a wrench, bolt is a puller and the wrench just
holds the rotor this can be done with standard tools.
Jake makes a real work of art to use as a replacement part, Mike (?)
also makes another version, either of these are 100 fold better than
the KHI chunk of metal.
To replace this part is pretty simple and straight forward, I would go
so far as to say easier than changing a track on a tank in the big
sandbox.
As for the pipe... save your money, your not going to gain anything in
my opinion, other than having to rejet and tinker with the settings
all the time. Well unless you like to piss off your neighbors and
ride around at zero dark thirty.
The stock pipe after de-tweetyifacation sounds a little more toney and
is fine with me. WTF is a tweety you ask ? That whistle that some
KHI pipes start to make after awhile, long screwdriver and a hammer
set the tweetying little bird free.
There are a few mods that cost next to nothing that make big
differences. Adjusting the pilot screw out is free and not only kills
that annoying popping/backfiring it makes the bike actually starts
when you hit the button, and not a dead battery later, plus will idle
when cold.
Improved throttle response can be achieved by yet another high dollar
approach by drilling the slide hole out to 1/8" so it can slide faster.
Of course the standard disclaimer applys, all mods are done at your
own risk.
Your not to far from Enduraid, coming up in a couple weekends if your
duty free and the wife will let you go camping for the weekend.

My wife wanted to go with, but I told her no, this will be my first so
would like to see what happens first, hate to have her just sitting
around the tent all day while the bikes are out and about, and the
thought of riding 2-up on trails sounds exciting as watching paint dry.
Dooden
Whom is now 100% duty-free after 20yrs, 0 months, 0 days.
Not all KLR riders spin the odometer like a mad man, its all in the
amount of smiles per mile to me, and I have had my A15 since late 01
and you have more miles than me.. But I have lots of smiles per mile.

new noise on acceleration
Maybe you just need to adjust the balancer. If that doesn't help
maybe your Doohickey is busted. Changed, or should I say installed mine
and the clacking went away.
