questions about rear shock spring swap out

Post by John Lyon » Wed Apr 02, 2003 4:24 pm

List: I plan on replacing my stock rear shock spring with the progressive spring this weekend. Are there any tip, tricks or potential hang ups I should be aware of? I found lots of messages about the spring in the archives but no messages about the physical replacement of the spring. Anyone have a quick overview of how to remove/replace the spring? If the list wants I can take some pictures and create a web page after the swap out. TIA, John Lyon ===== John __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! questions about rear shock spring swap out

Dropping the shock out of the bottom of the bike is a five minute operation. Just remove the upper mount bolt and two bolts from the bottom. The shock will drop right out the bottom of the bike. Of course you will need something to block up under the engine or a "center stand". The hardest part of replacing the spring is compressing the stock spring. It is weaker than the replacement springs but it has much more preload. Make sure your preload adjuster is at one or at the minimum setting. Use a spring compressor and be very careful. There is enough energy stored up in that spring to do you some major damage. The PS springs are stiffer but you won't have to compress them much, just enough to get the keeper on the spring. Reinstall in reverse order. Fred http://www.arrowheadmotorsports.com http://www.angelfire.com/ut/moab/cmc.html

questions about rear shock spring swap out

Post by Brad » Wed Apr 02, 2003 5:49 pm

I replaced my rear spring recently with the 350/450 from Fred, and the removal of the shock is as easy as already described, but the spring install was even easier. I went to a local tire shop (Les Schwab) and they swapped the spring out for me in less than 5 minutes and charged me nothing for it. Wouldn't even accept a tip. Very happy with the improvement, buy stuff from Fred, do it now, do it often. Brad A15 Centralia, WA

Hi John, Fred explained the procedure very well. I changed the springs on two shocks with the help of - at times - two other guys. We took my stock spring off with - believe it or not - pliers. We installed the new ones with a spring compressor made for car struts that we modified for the job. My advice is not to follow my example. Take the shock off the bike yourself and then - like Brad - go and have it done. You probably won't be as fortunate as he was; you'll have to pay something but it'll be worth it. Bogdan

2002 klr for sale.....

Post by Hank Pfister » Thu Apr 03, 2003 3:03 pm

I was visiting my local BMW motorcycle dealership yesterday, in Lynchburg, VA, and noticed they have a slightly used 2002 KLR 650 over with the used bikes for sale. It has just over 900 miles. Looks showroom new. They have $4000 on the tag, but I was talking to Jason about it and he said they just took it in on trade, and he would take several hundred less than that to make a quick sale. That would make it quite a good deal. If you are interested, or know of someone contemplating a KLR, give Hammersley Motors a call, ask for Jason, mention my name (won't count for much, but can't hurt). 800-293-4539 www.webparts.com Hank Pfister Copper Hill, VA pfestus1@... 2002 KLR 650, 1998 BMW R1100GS, 1973 BMW R75/5/Dnepr, 1975 BMW R90/6 for sale. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!?
